Cyclones renew rivalry with Brummer-led Trojans

Former HCHS player in first year as Atlantic’s head coach

ATLANTIC (Oct. 1) -- Following a one-year hiatus in the series, Harlan Community will renew an old football rivalry Friday night when it faces Atlantic at the Trojan Bowl.
The top-ranked Cyclones are off to a 1-0 start in Class 3A, District 6 (5-0 overall) after crushing Saydel 64-0 last week at Merrill Field. The Trojans (1-4) lost their district opener at ADM 40-16 after holding an early 13-0 lead. The game was stopped with three minutes left in the third quarter due to an injury suffered by an Atlantic player.
HCHS has won 36 of the last 37 matchups with Atlantic, including three games from 2009-2011 in which first-year Trojan head coach Joe Brummer was a starting lineman for the Cyclones. Brummer played college football at Morningside and has been part of Atlantic’s football coaching staff for several years. He is also the school’s head baseball coach.
Brummer said he has learned from some outstanding coaches over the years and he is hopeful to turn Atlantic’s program in the right direction very soon. He also knows the Trojans will have their hands full with a very talented and experienced Cyclone team.
“I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to play (for programs) like Harlan and Morningside University,” Brummer said. “I was very blessed to learn from some of the best coaches in the state and country. I just hope to be able to pass that knowledge on as well as my coaches did to me."
The Cyclones are averaging 50.4 points and nearly 400 total yards per game so far this season. Junior quarterback Teagon Kasperbauer is tied for first in Class 3A with 16 touchdown passes and ranks third with 1,130 passing yards, completing 63.5 percent of his throws.
Atlantic’s offense has been far less explosive thus far, averaging just 167 yards per game. The Trojans have been shut out by Glenwood (38-0), Kuemper Catholic (34-0) and Ballard (48-0), but did beat Shenandoah 37-13 in Week 3.
Atlantic is a junior-dominant squad with only four seniors listed among this week’s offensive and defensive starters.
