Cyclones scrimmage Vikings at Merrill Field

HCHS Girls

The HCHS Cyclones girls soccer team was back in action Friday night for a scrimmage against the AHSTW Vikings. Junior Cyclone Carly Torneten said it felt good to start the season.

“Obviously the wind isn’t what we wanted, but it feels good to get everybody out there and get moving again,” Torneten said. “We have a lot to look forward to this season.”

The Cyclones played two 30-minute halfs, and during the first half were able to get goals from Aubrey Schwieso, Torneten, Kayla Anderson, and Clara Mages.

“That was one thing we saw tonight is that it wasn’t just Aubrey or Kayla,” said Cyclone Head Coach Jared Boysen. “There were other girls that scored. Clara, I think that was her first goal and she was in the right spot at the right time. She knew how to finish it.”

In the second half, the Vikings were able to get contributions from Juniors Halle Goodman and Rian Buck. The Cyclones opened their season Monday at home against the Panorama Panthers, who finished 14-3 last season. Morgan Crees led the team with 48 goals, Mia Waddle with 38 assists, and goalkeeper Juliana Rizzuti with 58 saves.

“It’s always good to be at home,” Torneten said. “Panorama has always been a tough one, but I think we can compete with them. They lost a couple of good seniors and we’re excited to get going.”

The Vikings will be home against the East Sac County Raiders, who went 8-6 last season. Kenna Meyer had 19 goals, with Chloe Bieret having four assists, along with goalkeeper Denae Thayer coming away with 88 saves.

HCHS Boys

The HCHS Cyclones boys soccer team returned to Merrill Field Friday night for a scrimmage with the AHSTW Vikings.

“It was fantastic,” said Cyclone Head Coach Dave Voge. “Two weeks into practicing, and the whole team looks forward to this day. It was a little windy, but it was 75-80 degrees, so I’ll take it.”

The game started with the first goal coming from Cyclone Sophomore Alex McCulley.

“I really stayed out wide and the defenders came with me,” McCulley said. “That really opened the gap in the middle. They had the ability to get me the ball, so that was nice.”

Before the first half concluded, Sophomores Alex Medina Ortiz and Sam Shields were able to score goals for their team.

“That was really positive for us,” Voge said. “We’ve got quite a bit of speed this year and the guys seem to work well together. It was great to have several guys score.”

In the second half, the Cyclones were able to score multiple times including additional goals from Medina Ortiz and McCulley, and Spencer Fink.

The Cyclones were back at Merrill Field Monday to host the Panorama Panthers, who went 4-11 last season. The Panthers were led by Louis Czwalinna with 10 goals and five assists, along with goalkeeper Maddox Nunn with 16 saves.

“They’re a really good team usually,” McCulley said. “It should be a good game. We’ll be fresh.”

The Vikings will host the East Sac County Raiders who finished with a 5-6 record last year. Isaiah Aragon led the team with 14 goals and eight assists, along with goalkeeper Luke Wernimont with 115 saves.
