Cyclones shut down Stars to open season

On Monday in Sioux City, the HCHS boys varsity baseball team opened up their season on the road to play a doubleheader and were victorious in both games, winning the first 19-1 and taking the second 14-9.

“You could see a lot of fire in the guys,” said HCHS Head Baseball Coach Heath Stein. “To actually get out and compete in a regular season game, you could see the energy and the focus and that was really a positive and it carried into game two as well.”

During game one, senior Joey Moser got three hits and in game two added another two hits to start the year by hitting .500 at the plate.

“He’s kind of our tone setter, he’s kind of our leader,” he said. “He’s had a lot of success through his high school career. We expect big things out of Joey.”

In game two, junior Cael Goshorn had a dominant performance on the mound throwing four shutout innings, allowing no runs and striking out five for the Cyclones.

“Cael being left-handed is beneficial for us,” Stein added. “He does a very nice job of filling up the strike zone. He’s not really overpowering, but he’s getting a lot of movement on his ball. He was keeping hitters off balance and throwing a ton of strikes.”

The Cyclones play their home opener against the LeMars Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“It’s always fun to play at home in front of your own fans,” he said. “Braydon Ernst came in and got us out of a couple of jams to finish game one, so he’s going to be in the mix as well as Teagon Kasperbauer for Friday night.”
