Cyclones, Spartans both 2-1 in Atlantic Softball Tourney

AHSTW loses to three Hawkeye Ten squads

 ATLANTIC (June 5) -- Harlan Community and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton both finished with 2-1 records while AHSTW went 0-3 at last Saturday’s Atlantic Softball Tournament.
 The Cyclones’ two wins on the day came by scores of 11-1 over the Spartans and 11-0 vs. the Lady Vikes. The Spartans and Lady Vikes both faced three Hawkeye Ten opponents. Game recaps are as follows.
HCHS 11, Exira-EHK 1 (6 innings) -- The Cyclones took control early with six runs in the first inning and two in the second, totaling 15 hits and six stolen bases.
 HCHS hitting leaders: Emily Brouse 3-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI; Julia Schechinger 3-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 runs; Kate Heithoff 3-for-5, 2 RBI; Tianna Kasperbauer 2-for-4, 1 triple, 2 runs; Madison Schumacher 2-for-2, 2 RBI.
 HCHS pitching: Brouse worked two perfect innings with four strikeouts. Kasperbauer got the win with four innings of relief, allowing five hits and one run. She walked two and struck out four.
 Exira-EHK hitting leaders: Shay Burmeister 2-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI; Hailey Bieker 1 double.
 Exira-EHK pitching: Mollie Rasmussen took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in six innings.
Carroll 3, HCHS 1 -- The Tigers broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and won despite being outhit 9-3. Parker Adams singled in the fifth for Carroll and scored on a triple by Brielle Hinners, who later scored on a sacrifice bunt. The Cyclones put the tying runs on base in the seventh before the game ended on a fly out.
 HCHS hitting leaders: Julia Schechinger 3-for-3, 1 run; Kate Heithoff 2-for-3, 2 doubles; Tianna Kasperbauer 2-for-3. Schechinger, Jordan Heese and Aurora Miller singled in the fourth to plate the team’s only run.
 HCHS pitching: Emily Brouse took the loss, allowing three hits and three runs in six innings. She walked one, hit one batter and racked up 14 strikeouts.
 Carroll pitching: Camryn Schable pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Alyssa Brant.
HCHS 11, AHSTW 0 (5 innings) -- The Cyclones took control with three runs in the first and four each in the second and third innings, totaling 12 hits.
 HCHS hitting leaders: Emily Brouse 2-for-3, 1 home run, 3 RBI, 2 runs; Madison Schumacher 2-for-3, 1 double, 1 RBI; Julia Schechinger 2-for-2, 1 run, 3 RBI; Jordan Heese 2-for-2, 1 RBI; Kennedy Kjergaard 2-for-2, 1 run; Kate Heithoff 1 double, 2 runs.
 HCHS pitching: Tianna Kasperbauer pitched five innings of two-hit shutout ball for the win, walking none and striking out nine.
 AHSTW hitting leaders: Ally Meyers and Kailey Jones both singled for the Lady Vikes’ only hits.
 AHSTW pitching: Meyers and Loralei Wahling pitched two innings each.
Exira-EHK 6, Creston 4 (6 innings) -- The Spartans scored three runs in the second to open up a 4-1 lead and held on to beat a quality Class 4A opponent.
 Exira-EHK hitting leaders: Shay Burmeister 2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI; Macy Emgarten 2-for-3, 1 RBI; Mollie Rasmussen 2-for-4, 1 RBI. Team had 10 singles.
 Exira-EHK pitching: Macy Emgarten struck out 12 Panthers in six quality innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs. She hit two batters but did not issue a walk.
Exira-EHK 17, Red Oak 2 (3 innings) -- An 11-run second inning keyed the Spartans’ offensive barrage against the Tigers.
 Exira-EHK hitting leaders: Quinn Grubbs 4-for-4, 3 runs, 6 RBI; Alisa Partridge 2-for-3, 1 double, 3 runs, 1 RBI; Mollie Rasmussen 2-for-4, 1 double, 3 runs, 1 RBI; Shay Burmeister 1 double, 2 runs, 1 RBI.
 Exira-EHK pitching: Macy Emgarten pitched two innings and Rasmussen pitched one in relief, both allowing one unearned run.
Atlantic 6, AHSTW 1 -- The Trojans put together a five-run third inning and used the pitching of Olivia Engler to beat the Lady Vikes.
 AHSTW hitting leaders: Ally Meyers 2-for-2, 1 run; Natalie Hagadon 1 triple, 1 RBI; Darian Hansen 1 double. Team had seven hits.
 AHSTW pitching: Kailey Jones went six innings and took the loss, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. She walked none, hit two batters and struck out four.
Lewis Central 6, AHSTW 4 -- Once again it was one bad inning that doomed the Lady Vikes as LC scored all six of its runs in the fourth to erase a 3-0 AHSTW lead.
 AHSTW hitting leaders: Sienna Christian 2-for-3, 2 doubles, 1 RBI; Natalie Hagadon 1 double, 2 RBI; Ally Meyers 1-for-2, 2 stolen bases, 1 run.
 AHSTW pitching: Christian pitched the first three and two-thirds innings and took the loss. She allowed five hits and four earned runs, walked four and fanned seven.
 LC hitting leaders: Avery Heller and Taylor Elam (one double) both had two hits; Haley Back had a triple and 3 RBI.
