Cyclones sweep doubleheader against Saintes

Thursday at home, the HCHS varsity softball team welcomed the St. Albert Saintes into town for a doubleheader. They were victorious winning the first game, 3-2, and taking the second game, 4-2.

In game one, junior Regan Kramer’s bat came alive as she had three hits with two runs driven in. But there was no bigger moment in the game than when she had a walk-off base hit to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning for her team.

“Regan was seeing the ball last night,” said HCHS Head Softball Coach Toshia Kasperbauer. “She can make hard contact if she keeps her basics in tact and she was doing that last night. Regan had a great game at the plate and that was great to see.”

In game two, junior Jenna Gessert got the ball as she stepped onto the mound and dominated the St. Albert hitters and came away with her first victory on the season.

“Jenna had the hitters on their front foot, which caused a lot of pop flies and ground balls,” she said. “The girls played great defensive behind her. It is always nice to get out there on the mound and throw a great game and get a win on top of it and Jenna did just that.”

With these two wins, it pushes the Cyclones overall record to 7-8 and it marks their third consecutive victory. They will have a few off days before their next match against the Glenwood Rams, 8-4, which will be another doubleheader.

Glenwood has won four straight games and has a talented roster, including freshman pitcher Allison Koontz who leads the way with 91 strikeouts and a 2.17 earned run average.

“It is important for them to have some rest, but we have to regroup for another big week,” she added. “Their pitcher has some speed and mixes in some pitchers. We will have to be disciplined at the plate and will need to be sure that we get our cuts in when she gives us a fastball.”
