Cyclones sweep past Monarchs

 DENISON (Aug. 31) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team won its conference opener in straight sets Tuesday night, sweeping an error-prone Denison-Schleswig team by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-19.
 HCHS improved to 6-4 overall and 1-0 inside the Hawkeye Ten while Denison dropped to 1-4 and 0-1.
 Senior outside hitter Zophi Hendricks led the Cyclones at the net with 28 successful attacks and 13 kills and had an efficiency of .281. Claire Schmitz (.500) and Shelby Sisson (.267) added seven kills apiece while Lauren McLaughlin had five. Maci Schmitz set 33 of the team’s 37 assists.
 On the defensive side, Madi Kjergaard and Delaney Wegner both put up 10 digs, followed by Savanna Musich with nine and Maci Schmitz eight.
 The Cyclones struggled with their serving at times, finishing with 13 errors to just seven aces, but Denison had even more trouble from the service line. Maci Schmitz served 15-of-18 with four aces and Kjergaard was 13-of-13 with one ace.
