Cyclones win fifth consecutive match

On Friday, the HCHS boys varsity soccer team went on the road to play the St. Albert Falcons and beat them, 1-0 for their fifth consecutive victory.

“St. Albert is always a tough opponent, and the game is usually a one goal affair, as it was this time,” said HCHS Assistant Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Pat Shelton. “Getting a conference win is nice and to play in a close well played game before the playoffs starts is always a good thing for the team. We did a nice job of winning midfield and putting shots on goal.”

The lone goal on the night came from a freshman who had never scored a goal at the high school level before.

“Reese Koch put his foot through the ball from 25 yards out and hit the back of the net six minutes into the first half,” he said. “It was his first high school goal.”

With the playoffs rapidly approaching, the Cyclones know the road ahead will be a tough one.

“If we play as a team and use our bench, we can do some damage in the playoffs,” he added. “Soccer is a funny game, one team can dominate possession, have more shots on goal and still lose the game 1-0.”

Their next match will be Monday at Merrill Field against the Creston Panthers, 7-6, at 5 p.m.
