District Baseball: Spartans ousted by 3rd-ranked Falcons

COUNCIL BLUFFS (July 14) -- St. Albert followed up a five-run third inning with nine runs in the fourth and finished off Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton 16-2 in a five-inning Class 1A district baseball semifinal last Tuesday night.
The third-ranked Falcons (19-1) advanced to Saturday’s District 14 final and won big again, beating up Sidney 16-1 in four to earn a spot in Tuesday’s Substate 7 final against CAM (15-2). The Spartans, meanwhile, finished 3-12 overall.
Exira-EHK struck first at St. Albert, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Dane Paulsen’s RBI triple drove in Trey Petersen and an error scored courtesy runner Kayden Hansen. The Spartans would be held hitless the rest of the way, however, as Falcon senior Lance Wright threw a five-inning one-hitter with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
St. Albert tied the game in the bottom of the first and took control in the third and fourth, totaling 12 hits for the game and taking advantage of five walks, three hit batsmen and some Spartan errors as well. Wright homered and doubled for the Falcons as part of a 3-for-3, four-RBI night.
The youthful Spartans will lose just one senior off the 2020 roster in Ethan Andersen.
