Eagles go flightless against Cyclones

“We always talk about that, we may only get one ball hit to us, but we have to be ready for the full seven innings." -Toshia Kasperbauer, HCHS Head Softball Coach

Wednesday night at home, the HCHS varsity softball team welcomed the Underwood Eagles to their field and dismantled them, 8-2.

“It was nice to get a win, but it was nicer to see us put some runs on the board,” said HCHS Head Softball Coach Toshia Kasperbauer. “We needed that confidence booster.”

The game broke open in the bottom of the third inning when the Cyclones dropped a five spot on the Eagles as one of the Cyclones hottest hitters came through with three hits and three runs batted in.

“Madison [Kjergaard] may swing at a bad pitch here and there, but to see her shake that off and regroup has been good to see,” Kasperbauer said. “She has been very disciplined at the plate and has done a great job at finding a way to get on.”

In the top of the seventh inning with two outs and a few runners on base, the Eagles were threatening to make a run at the Cyclones, but that threat ended when sophomore outfielder Teya Frohlich came sprinting in to make a catch along the first base line and secure the final out of the game for her team.

“We always talk about that, we may only get one ball hit to us, but we have to be ready for the full seven innings,” she added. “She was ready and she made a great catch.”

With this win, Cyclones now have a record of 5-8. They will welcome the St. Albert Saintes, 4-8, for a doubleheader with the first game set to get underway Thursday at 3 p.m.

“St. Albert has an experienced pitcher and she has a little bit of speed,” Coach Kasperbauer said. “We have to be ready to get our bat around. They came to our place last year and beat us on our home turf, so we have to be ready to play for a full 14 innings.”
