Eagles soar over Vikings

Friday night, the Underwood Eagles came into town to play the AHSTW Vikings who were riding a seven game win streak, but the Eagles quickly put a stop to that as they won via the mercy rule, 19-5.

Freshman Sienna Christian got the ball to start the night for the Vikings, but only lasted 1.2 innings.

“We came out prepared to win,” said AHSTW Head Softball Coach Trevor Gipple. “We’ve been on a hot streak, we couldn’t find our bats early, they obviously did. They took advantage of our mistakes.”

The Vikings played a three game tournament on Saturday against the Webster City Lynx, the Essex Trojans and the Martensdale-St. Marys Blue Devils. They beat the Lynx and Trojans, 10-3 and 12-0. They lost to the Blue Devils 15-6.

Before the games, Gipple said he wanted to see how the kids handled adversity.

“This was a big one for them,” he said. “If they can bounce back and come out at 9 a.m. and flush this loss and just go to work, I’ll be happy and it’ll be a good day.”

Gipple said he was going to senior Ally Meyers for the first game over the weekend.

“Her energy on the mound and presence is a big part of that seven win run that we were on,” he said.
