Fourth-quarter response lifts Cyclones past Falcons

COUNCIL BLUFFS (Jan. 5) -- When a 49-40 lead to start the fourth quarter turned into a 50-49 deficit less than two and a half minutes later, the Harlan Community boys basketball team buckled down and found a way to win.
Sparked by seven points from Shane Chamberlain, the Cyclones used a pivotal 9-3 run to regain their edge and hit just enough free throws down the stretch to outlast St. Albert 64-61 here Friday night, avoiding a two-game slide to start 2018.
HCHS senior Jared Moser, who missed a pair of foul shots with :06.4 to go, made his next two attempts three seconds later and Chamberlain deflected and stole the Falcons’ inbounds pass to seal the victory.
The sixth-ranked (3A) Cyclones bounced back from a 14-point loss at Atlantic three nights earlier and improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play. St. Albert, which already owns two wins over a solid Kuemper Catholic team this season, dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the H-10.
“We played hard tonight and that’s what I liked,” said HCHS coach Mitch Osborn. “We played hard with effort and we were getting after loose balls.
“We withstood their run and held on to win. That says a lot about our team.”
The theme of the night was Harlan building a nice lead and St. Albert rallying back. The host Falcons led just four times: 2-0 in the first quarter, 22-21 in the second, 29-28 to start the third and 50-49 with 5:34 remaining.

HCHS Scoring Leaders: Logan Klaassen 19, Shane Chamberlain 15, Deren Schmitz 11, Jared Moser 8.

St. Albert Scoring Leaders: Jake Carley 22, Tyler Blaha 16, Matt Fagan 10, Kyle Barnes 10.
