Girls Tennis win over Trojans; eliminated by Kuemper Catholic

The HCHS girls varsity tennis team started their Saturday morning with a 5-2 victory over the Atlantic Trojans, but ended the day by dropping their match to Kuemper Catholic 5-0.

“We started out with an exciting match against Atlantic for our first round regional play,” said HCHS Head Tennis Coach Katie Arentson. “Our confidence and grit was tested in the next sets as our opponents really put up a good fight overall.”

Arentson did highlight players on their roster that stood out throughout the course of the match against the Trojans.

“Erica Rust and Sammy Swenesen both played amazingly well with strong serves and aggressive net play to earn two more points for our team with a 6-3 win in both spots,” she said. “Finally, Scarlett McGuinness had an amazing battle in the number four position. She was down 1-5 in the second set...and yet fought her way back to a 7-5 win.”

Arenston knew after the victory over the Trojans, Kuemper Catholic would be a tough match for the team.

“Kuemper had just won the conference championship this year, so we knew this would be a very tough match for us,” she added. “We were determined to battle and give it our all, and the girls did just that. They stepped up and really played at a whole new level.”

With their loss to Kuemper, the girls season officially ends on the year.

“While I am sad that we will not be moving on in the tournament, I am excited for the girls as we ended the season with a lot of success today in our matches,” she said. “They played hard and gave it their all, and I am proud of the team.”
