Glenwood hands Cyclones second defeat, 28-21

HCHS defense tallies six sacks but allows 449 yards; dropped passes hinder offense after early big plays

GLENWOOD (Oct. 4) -- Harlan Community needed a win at Glenwood Friday night to stay tied for first in the Class 3A, District 9 standings and take momentum into this week’s showdown with unbeaten Lewis Central.
And while the Cyclones played very well in spurts, untimely mistakes left them with a lot of ‘what ifs’ and ‘what could have beens’ to ponder in film study.
The Rams, who fell behind 7-0 in the opening minute of play, scored four of the next five touchdowns and held off HCHS 28-21 for their first home win over the Cyclones in 25 tries all-time.
Glenwood outgained Harlan 449-326 in total offense and improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in district play. The Cyclones dropped to 4-2 and 1-1, respectively.
“We did some good things. We came out the gate pretty hot... (but) we made a lot of mistakes tonight,” said HCHS interim head coach Todd Bladt. “A lot of discipline things we need to address, so we’re going to have to look at that this week and make sure that we get everybody on the same page out on the field.”
The Cyclones pulled within 28-21 on Thomas Frederick’s five-yard touchdown catch with 8:54 remaining, but their last two offensive series ended with their only two turnovers of the game.
After Glenwood’s 52-yard field goal attempt fell short with 1:02 to go, HCHS took over at its own 20 with no timeouts left and reached into its bag of tricks for a hook-and-lateral attempt. Johnathan Monson’s initial pass was complete to Alex Schechinger for about eight yards, but Schechinger was hit immediately and the ball popped loose as he tried to feed Joey Moser with a lateral. Kyle Jorgensen recovered the fumble for the Rams, who then took a knee to end the game.
A more frustrating Harlan possession occurred in the third quarter as the Cyclones (down 21-14) were attempting to march 98 yards after recovering a Ram fumble.
Facing third down and 13 at Glenwood’s 28, Monson’s first down scramble was negated by an illegal procedure penalty as HCHS did not have enough players on the line of scrimage. On the very next play, Monson hit a wide open receiver down the seam for a possible touchdown but the ball was dropped. Then on fourth-and-18, Moser made a nice catch going out of bounds but was one yard shy of the first down.
