Harlan Trap Shooting team set to begin season

The Harlan trap shooting team is ready for the new season to begin.

“We’re all happy and excited to be back,” said Head Coach Jason Paulsen. “We have a lot of new kids, and a lot of young kids this year. Last year, we had around five rookies and this year we have a dozen. With the new kids, there’s usually a lot of excitement to get started and try it.”

Paulsen talked about where the team ended last season, including some highlights throughout the season.

“Last year the season ended really well,” he said. “We went to all the state competitions. We went to the state skeet competition and we won medals or trophies from every one of the awards ceremonies and competitions. That makes it fun when people are shooting well and winning some stuff.”

With a fairly new roster, Paulsen knows the challenges that come with new students entering the sport for the first time.

“The struggles this year to start with such a young team is getting everyone up to speed and shooting well,” he added.

Paulsen talked about returning students this season he sees standing out.

“Some of the seventh and eighth graders are going to be good help to the younger kids,” Paulsen said. “Some of them have younger brothers and sisters there that are starting this year. I know Camden Heese, Dalton Bradley, and Joel Gross, they have been around quite a bit to help their siblings get started.”

Paulsen highlighted some meets throughout their season that are going to be key to performing well at.

“May 30, we have a sporting place shoot out at our range,” Paulsen added. “That’ll be the first time we’ve ever done that at home. April 5 is our first home meet, and that’s the day we do our throwing for our fundraiser raffle. We do that at the end of the day, so that’s always a big one so people can get their prizes and kids can get their awards. Those are a couple of things that are coming up that will be a big deal.”
