HCHS cross country girls win again at Creston, boys place second

 CRESTON (Sept. 24) -- Claiming a trio of top-three individuals combined, the Harlan Community girls won their fourth team title of the year and the boys earned their best finish so far (second) in Tuesday’s Creston Cross Country Invitational held at Southwestern Community College.
 The Cyclone girls were led by Lucy Borkowski’s second-place run in 20:27 while Kaia Bieker placed third in 20:44. Trey Gross returned to the Cyclone boys’ lineup after missing two meets due to an appendectomy and didn’t miss a beat, placing third in 17:34.
 Overall, seven HCHS girls and four boys finished in the top 21 of their respective race in the two-class meet.
 The fourth-ranked (3A) Cyclone girls won the Class A team crown with a solid score of 35, followed by 14th-ranked Glenwood (81) and 10th-ranked Atlantic (110). The Trojans were competing without one of the state’s top runners in fifth-ranked Taylor McCreedy.
 The 12th-ranked Atlantic boys posted a winning score of 49, HCHS placed second at 83 and Lewis Central (91) took third.
 Individual champions on the day were Braelyn Baker of Creston (20:18) and sixth-ranked Craig Alan Becker of Atlantic (17:09).
 “Creston is a challenging course and will be the site of our conference meet so I’m happy we had the opportunity to run on it,” said HCHS coach Doug Renkly.
 In addition to the top-three finishes by Borkowski and Bieker, the Cyclone girls had Abi Albertsen, Abby Alberti and Liv Freund place ninth, 10th and 11th in a span of five seconds. Brecken Van Baale finished 15th and Raegen Wicks was 19th.
 For the HCHS boys, Gross placed third and was backed up by Brennon Munch in 12th (18:37), Isaac Jones 16th (19:00); Mitchell Rueschenberg 21st (19:20) and Dalton Gross 31st (19:33).
