HCHS earns efficient four-set win over Atlantic
ATLANTIC (Sept. 19) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team won its third consecutive Hawkeye Ten road match Thursday night with a four-set victory in Atlantic, prevailing 25-13, 25-11, 19-25, 25-11 to improve to 3-1 in conference play (8-8 overall).
HCHS served at a 93.5 percent clip with 15 aces and produced a kill efficiency of .217, totaling 39 kills to just 14 attack errors. Atlantic (4-16, 0-3 H-10) served only 82 percent with three aces and finished the night with a negative kill efficiency.
Zophi Hendricks led the net attack, hitting 40-of-42 with 13 kills (.262) and Macie Leinen was an efficient 17-of-20 with 11 kills (.400). Lauren Andersen added eight kills (16/17, .412), Claire Schmitz had four (.300) and Delaney Wegner had three.
The HCHS serving stars of the night were Ashley Hall, Jocelyn Cheek and Elise Juhl, who combined for 11 aces while putting 57-of-58 attempts in play. Hall had a particularly good game from the service line, finishing 26-of-27 with seven aces. The junior libero also tallied a team-high 16 digs and had a serve receive average of 2.82 on a scale of 3.00.
Haley Manz set 24 assists, Cheek added 11 assists and Leinen and Andersen combined for nine blocks.
HCHS 1-5 at Red Oak Tourney
RED OAK (Sept. 21) -- The Cyclones beat the top-ranked team in Class 1A but finished with a 1-5 record at Saturday’s Red Oak Volleyball Tournament.
HCHS beat No. 1 Sidney 24-22, 21-15 during the middle of the day while losing to 10th-ranked (3A) Red Oak (11-21, 18-21), Tri-Center (18-21, 16-21), sixth-ranked (3A) Mount Vernon (15-21, 21-17, 9-15), Treynor (12-21, 18-21) and Creston (18-21, 12-21).
