HCHS girls beat Knights by 42

 CARROLL (Dec. 10) -- Sophomore Claire Schmitz had a career night on Tuesday with 20 points, 15 rebounds and four steals to lead the resurgent Harlan Community girls basketball team to a 69-27 rout at Kuemper Catholic.
 HCHS never trailed in the Hawkeye Ten contest, taking control with a 25-5 second-quarter surge and improving to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The struggling Knights fell to 1-3 and 1-1, respectively.
 Schmitz did yeoman’s work on the glass with 12 of her 15 rebounds coming on the offensive end.
 Caitlyn Leinen, another sophomore, scored 10 points off the bench and Ashley Hall also hit double figures with 10 points and six assists. Brecken Van Baale (4 steals, 4 assists) and Jocelyn Cheek added nine points each and Macie Leinen had five points and eight boards.
 HCHS got up 67 shots on the night, making 29 for a field goal percentage of 43.3. The Cyclones’ 43 rebounds included 21 offensive caroms and they also posted impressive totals of 18 assists and 17 steals.
