HCHS girls win Denison Cross Country Invite

Sonderman, Tyler Shelton both place 2nd

DENISON (Sept. 28) -- Placing five runners in the top nine overall, the Harlan Community girls posted a dominating team score of 26 to win Tuesday’s Denison-Schleswig Cross Country Invitational by 40 points.
The Cyclone girls moved up to seventh in this week’s Class 3A team rankings and avenged a head-to-head loss against No. 2-ranked (1A) Logan-Magnolia from a week earlier at Tri-Center. The Panthers, who were competing without their second-best runner in Madison Sporrer, placed second with a 66 and Tri-Center took third with a 117. IKM-Manning (218) was 10th.
Kuemper Catholic won the boys team title with a score of 75, followed by Missouri Valley (101), Woodbine (102) and HCHS (111) in fourth. IKM-M finished seventh out of 15 teams with a 162.
Even a Lo-Ma girls squad at full strength wouldn’t have been able to top the Cyclones on Tuesday. Freshman Lindsey Sonderman and senior Kaia Bieker once again led HCHS by placing second and third, respectively, with times of 20:30 and 20:53. Ellie Gross placed fifth in 22:12, Taylor Bieker was seventh (22:30) and Jenna Gessert was ninth (22:40).
Logan-Magnolia senior Courtney Sporrer won the race in 20:18 and was the lone Panther in the top 10.
The IKM-Manning girls had one medalist in freshman Emily Albertsen, who placed 16th. Senior Tyler Shelton paced the Cyclone boys with a second-place time of 17:33, finishing 20 seconds behind individual champion Patrick Heffernan of Boyer Valley. The IKM-Manning boys boasted a pair of medal winners in Caden Keller (11th) and Lane Sams (16th).
