HCHS sweeps Panthers

HARLAN -- Fighting off some mid-match bouts of sluggishness, the Harlan Community volleyball team was still able to finish off a Senior Night sweep of Creston here Tuesday, winning 25-16, 25-22, 25-17, to maintain its share of first place in the Hawkeye Ten Conference.
The 2nd-ranked (Class 4-A) Cyclones took control of game one with a 9-1 run and never trailed in game three, but had their hands full throughout a second set that was tightly contested start to finish. The Panthers held a small lead for much of the set - including 17-15 - before Haley Leinen and Taylor Frederick spearheaded a 10-5 Harlan finish that included the final three points following a 22-22-tie.
Frederick (23) and Leinen (10) combined for 33 of the Cyclones’ 41 kills and posted excellent kill efficiencies of .526 and .476, respectively.
HCHS improved to 26-5 overall and 7-1 in the H-10 standings, tied with Kuemper Catholic and Lewis Central for first place. Creston, which showed some good fight at the net behind seniors Sydney Dunphy, Angie Sorensen and Jenna Taylor, dropped to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in league play (tied for fifth place).
