HCHS Unified Basketball Scrimmage fun for all

HARLAN -- There were 118 total points, numerous three-pointers and countless big smiles.
The Harlan Community Schools’ first-ever Unified Basketball Scrimmage was a success here Thursday night as HCHS varsity and junior varsity players teamed with Special Olympics athletes for a regulation 32-minute game in the high school gym.
The event was sponsored by the school’s Best Buddies program and organized by Rachel Anderson, president of Best Buddies.
The game ended in a 59-59 tie after the White Team erased a double-digit deficit in the second half and took the lead on a three-pointer by Mike Kenkel. A driving layup by Lokahi Smith of the Red Team tied the score with about 10 seconds left.
Both squads demonstrated great skill and sportsmanship throughout the game and kept the crowd entertained with an array of outside shots and determined drives to the hoop. The high school pep band added to a fun atmosphere, playing before the game and during the action. Kate Heithoff and Hannah Tunender served as public address announcers. A unified group of cheerleaders also took part and performed at halftime.
The Red Team roster included: Drake Riley, Mike Kenkel, Tony Sparandeo, Mark Kenkel, Carter Wagner, Joseph Fah, Konner Leinen, Jace Gubbels, Gunner Schmitz, Brecken Van Baale, Claire Schmitz and Jocelyn Cheek.
The White Team roster included: Cam Hicks, Lokahi Smith, Jonathan Ayers, Gracie Assmann, Matt Kenkel, Jacob Birch, Joey Moser, Ashton Lyon, Ashley Hall, Raegen Wicks, Brynn Klaassen, Teagon Kasperbauer, Brayton Schechinger.
The following members of this year’s state-bound HCHS boys basketball team served as coaches: Connor Bruck, Cody Christensen, Michael Heithoff, Johnathan Monson, Michael Erlemeier and Will McLaughlin. Isaiah Ahrenholtz, Connor Frame, Brad Curren and Aidan Hall helped collect donations at the doors to benefit the HCSD Special Olympics.
