HISTORIC WIN FOR AHSTW VOLLEYBALL

Lady Vikes defeat Tri-Center 3-1 in 2A regional opener, notching first win vs. Trojans since 2001

NEOLA (Oct. 22) -- Going into this week’s regional tournament, the AHSTW volleyball team hadn’t won a single set vs. Tri-Center during the 13-year era of Quik Stats Iowa.
As for the Lady Vikes’ last match win over the Trojans, that came in the year 2001 - a four-set decision.
The drought, at long last, has officially ended.
Overcoming a close loss in set one Tuesday night, AHSTW outlasted T-C 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-14 to earn a thrilling Class 2A regional first round victory for the program.
The senior-led Lady Vikes (20-13) played stronger and more determined as the match went on while the youthful Trojans - sporting no seniors - struggled with errors and withered a bit down the stretch to finish 21-16.
For AHSTW school record holders Kinsey Scheffler and Paige Osweiler, along with five other seniors, it was a night of redemption following six career defeats at the hands of T-C, which won this year’s regular season match 25-18, 26-24, 25-18.
“It’s huge and it feels really good,” said Scheffler, who was dominant at the net with 28 kills, breaking the single-game school record for the third time this year.
“It’s super exciting,” said Osweiler, who had 24 digs. “I think that we’ve worked really hard for it all season long and it’s finally starting to pay off.
“I think just the love for the game really started to come out [in the last three sets]. We have a team full of seniors and we don’t want this to end. We always kind of have a tough first set but we came back today.”
For those who follow the Western Iowa Conference, Tuesday’s result wasn’t nearly as shocking as it was historic in nature.
The Lady Vikes have endured close losses against some quality teams this fall while still posting a second consecutive 20-win season. They will now play at 11th-ranked Underwood (28-5) in a Region 4 quarterfinal October 28.
Fifth-year AHSTW head coach Kelsey Muxfeldt has guided the program to a 60-38 record over the last three seasons following a combined seven wins in her first two years at the helm. The Lady Vikes went 1-22 the year before she arrived.
