Jones’ diving save preserves Cyclone win over T.J.

HCHS goalie prevents possible overtime with 1:47 to go; sophomore Culp scores two goals in 3-2 victory

HARLAN -- Sophomore Levi Culp scored his first two varsity goals and junior goalie Keaton Jones snared a diving save with less than two minutes left as Harlan Community topped Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson 3-2 in boys soccer action Tuesday (May 2) at Merrill Field.
Trailing 1-0 for much of the first half courtesy of an own goal in the 15th minute, HCHS tied the game before intermission and scored twice in a 92-second span early in the second half - including an own goal off TJ - before narrowly holding on for the win.
The Cyclones, who were left just outside of this week’s Class 2-A ‘Top 16’ rankings, improved to 8-1 overall while the Yellow Jackets lost their sixth straight match (mostly vs. 3-A competition) to fall to 2-8 on the season.
Despite its record, Thomas Jefferson does boast a 5-1 win at Denison early in the year - the same Monarch team that blanked HCHS 4-0 on April 20.
