Lady Vike harriers place 2nd in WIC Championships

Dreyer finishes 4th for third-place IKM-M boys

AVOCA (Oct. 14) -- The AHSTW girls placed second and the IKM-Manning boys took third in Monday’s Western Iowa Conference Cross Country Championships, combining for six top-12 medalists at the Avoca Golf and Country Club.
 Top-ranked (1A) Logan-Magnolia won the girls team title with a score of 31, followed by the eighth-ranked Lady Vikes with 51, No. 13 Tri-Center (69), Treynor (91) and IKM-Manning (115).
Tri-Center (ranked 11th) won the boys title by a narrow 46-48 margin over Treynor and IKM-M placed third out of seven full squads with an 84.
AHSTW head coach Jenny Hamilton said it was fun to accomplish a season-long goal on the home course.
“It was a goal at the beginning of the season to finish in the top two in the conference,” she said. “We take a lot of pride in how we compete, just how we race against people in the conference. We talk a lot about ‘these are the people that we will see... all year round.’ We want to give them a reason to respect us, I guess. I’m proud of the way the team carried themselves and I think they can be proud of what they accomplished today.”
Both Hamilton and IKM-Manning coach Robert Cast noted that many runners improved their times from the AHSTW Invite in Avoca last month. Cast said the Wolves were striving for third place on the boys side and were able to get the job done.
The highest area finisher was IKM-Manning junior Quentin Dreyer, who finished just nine seconds out of second and placed fourth overall with a five-kilometer time of 17:05.
The AHSTW girls’ top runner, Ryann Portch, was unable to finish Monday’s race but her teammates stepped up to earn four spots in the top 12. Juniors Julia Kock (20:30) and Chloe Falkena (20:42) placed seventh and eighth while juniors Holly Hoepner (21:31) and Jade Draman (21:45) came in 10th and 12th.
The IKM-Manning girls were led by freshman Morgan Hanson, who placed 18th in 22:18.
