Lady Vikes win 1A state qualifying meet; Dreyer of IKM-M also advances to Fort Dodge

MOUNT AYR (Oct. 24) -- The AHSTW girls cross country team, along with IKM-Manning junior Quentin Dreyer, advanced to state last Thursday with their performances at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Mount Ayr.
The eighth-ranked Lady Vikes will be making their second state meet trip in three years as a team after winning a four-team battle for first place at the Mount Ayr Country Club.
Led by top-10 finishers Chloe Falkena, Ryann Portch and Julia Kock, AHSTW posted a winning score of 55 to edge Van Meter (56) by one point. Nodaway Valley (70) also qualified for state by placing third but No. 13 Earlham (71) was left out of the 1A state field.
“What a tough race!” noted Lady Vikes’ coach Jenny Hamilton. “We came into this meet knowing that there would be four very equally matched teams. Skill-wise, we thought this meet could have four different outcomes if we ran it four different ways. We knew it would come down to head, heart and guts, and today we had more”
The AHSTW girls will compete at 2:00 p.m. November 2 in the State Cross Country Championships at Fort Dodge.
Dreyer, meanwhile, will run at 2:30 p.m. after qualifying for state as an individual. Dreyer placed seventh at Mount Ayr with a time of 17:25.63, leading the Wolves to fourth place as a team.
“Quentin has worked very hard to accomplish his goal of making it to state. Today was a great day for him. All the hard work paid off,” said IKM-M coach Robert Cast. “He ran a smart race and did what he needed to do.”
Third-ranked Nodaway Valley (43), No. 2 Earlham (61) and No. 15 Ogden (96) were the clear cut top three in the boys half of the meet Thursday. IKM-Manning won the battle for fourth with a score of 158.
In addition to Dreyer’s seventh-place effort, junior Connor Keller finished 28th for the Wolves, senior Adam Gruhn was 32nd and junior Tanner Spoelstra finished 37th.
The IKM-Manning girls finished sixth with a score of 196 and just missed having an individual state qualifier as freshman Morgan Hanson came in 16th - less than two seconds behind the 15th qualifier - in 21:38. The Exira-EHK girls also had a full squad and finished 12th with a score of 280, led by freshman Ella Petersen in 54th.
