Monarch girls sweep HCHS in opener

HARLAN -- The Harlan Community girls tennis team ran into a tough matchup in Thursday’s season opener, losing all nine varsity matches against a senior-laden Denison-Schleswig squad. HCHS did prevail in junior varsity action, winning 6-5.
Northwest winds gusting over 40 mph made it important to hit shots low and firm, especially on the four unprotected courts north of the high school. Monarch junior Jacque Ingram topped Jessica DuVal 8-0 in the number-one singles match, but a few other matches were more competitive. Cyclone senior Maggie McGrath lost 6-8 in No. 2 singles while the No. 3 doubles team of Jilian Meyer and Brooke Nelson lost 5-8.
