Redemption served as Wolves earn state berth

One year after heartbreaking substate loss, IKM-M boys outlast Nodaway Valley behind Wegner’s 27 points

ATLANTIC -- No one could blame IKM-Manning’s players and coaches for being a bit jubilant Saturday night. This post-game celebration, after all, had been a full year in the making.
Twelve months after losing a substate final heartbreaker vs. Treynor - the eventual Class 2-A champion - the Wolves finished strong in their long-awaited shot at redemption, outlasting Nodaway Valley 65-60 in a barn burner of a Class 1-A Substate 7 final at Atlantic.
Led by Ben Wegner’s dominant low-post performance, along with Jared Vollstedt’s clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, the 7th-ranked Wolves took the lead for good with a late 6-0 run and clinched their first trip to the Boys State Basketball Tournament since 2010.
IKM-M (22-2) is seeded fifth in the 1-A state field and will face fourth-seeded West Hancock (23-2) in a state quarterfinal set for Monday, March 7 (10:30 a.m.) at Wells Fargo Arena.
