Senior trio leads Cyclones past Kuemper 62-46

Veteran Denison squad plays in Harlan Friday

CARROLL (Dec. 10) -- Harlan Community took control with an early 16-0 run to lead 23-4 and cruised to its third straight win Tuesday night, beating the Kuemper Catholic boys 62-46 to set up a big matchup with Denison-Schleswig on Friday.
The Cyclones’ three starting seniors led the way with big all-around games against the Knights. Johnathan Monson totaled 19 points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists, Michael Heithoff had 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals and Connor Bruck added 16 points, six boards and two steals. The same trio combined to shoot 20-of-31 from the floor.
Despite struggling from long range (2-of-15 threes), the Cyclones shot 52 percent as a team. They also came up with 19 steals and stretched a 33-18 halftime lead to 49-29 after three quarters.
“It is always tough to win on the road and I was very pleased how we took control early,” stated HCHS coach Mitch Osborn. “We got out of the gate with a very solid first half... Our 2-3 and 1-3-1 zones were very effective as we came up with 19 steals and other deflections which led to run-out fast breaks."
HCHS improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play with the win. Kuemper (0-3, 0-2 H-10) held the Cyclones scoreless for a four and a half minute stretch of the fourth quarter to cut the margin to 12 points before Harlan went to its delay offense and put the game away.
Kyle Berg led the Knights with 14 points, followed by Cole Collison with nine and Tyler Putney eight.
Erlemeier added eight points for the Cyclones and Frame had two points and eight rebounds. HCHS finished the game with just six turnovers and six fouls.
