Softball: Spartans top ACGC, Woodbine
GUTHRIE CENTER (June 12) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton softball team improved to 14-3 on Saturday night, holding off a late comeback to beat ACGC 8-5.
Leading 3-2 after three, the 12th-rated (1A) Spartans seemed to take control with a five-run outburst in the fifth but allowed three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh before hanging on for the non-conference win.
Macy Emgarten pitched a three-hitter for Exira-EHK, striking out eight and walking four. All five Charger runs were unearned as E-EHK was able to overcome six errors on defense.
The Spartans tallied eight hits as a team, led by Mollie Rasmussen’s 2-for-3 game and two runs scored.
Hannah Nelson doubled and scored while Shay Burmeister, Alisa Partridge, Emgarten, Kate Hansen and Hailey Bieker hit singles. Gemini Goodwin reached base two times, had a pair of stolen bases and scored a run.
ACGC (7-8) was led by Sophie Dorsey’s two singles and doubles by Jorja Hoover and Madalyn Kelsey.
Exira-EHK 10, Woodbine 0
WOODBINE (June 11) -- Macy Emgarten pitched a three-hit shutout and the Spartans scored six runs in the top of the sixth to finish off Woodbine 10-0 Friday night, improving to 7-0 in the Rolling Valley Conference.
Emgarten recorded six strikeouts and walked just one batter in her six innings of work as her teammates played error-free ball behind her.
Shay Burmeister was a spark plug at the top of the Spartan batting order, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Mollie Rasmussen went 2-for-3 and also scored twice, Kate Hansen had a pair of singles and one run scored and Alisa Partridge added a double. Quinn Grubbs had a single and a stolen base and Gemini Goodwin singled and scored two runs.
Woodbine pitcher Charlie Pryor allowed nine hits and 10 runs, although only one run was earned.
