Sonderman wins again at LC Invite; Cyclone girls nearly top Rams

HCHS girls place one point out of first, boys take fifth, Lady Vikes ninth

COUNCIL BLUFFS (Sept. 11) -- Harlan Community cross country coach Doug Renkly may have said it best when describing the running style of freshman sensation Lindsey Sonderman.
“Lindsey’s got basically one gear. She just goes and doesn’t look back,” Renkly stated following Saturday morning’s Lewis Central Invitational at Iowa Western Community College.
For the second straight week, Sonderman earned a first-place medal in convincing fashion on the IWCC campus, taking 15 seconds off her winning A.L. Invite time with a five-kilometer clocking of 20:15.9.
Cyclone teammate Kaia Bieker improved her A.L. time by nearly a minute and placed second in 21:03.2; however, HCHS was narrowly edged out by Glenwood for the team title, 43 to 44. Plattsmouth took third with a score of 72 and Tri-Center (125) was fourth.
The Cyclone boys, led by Tyler Shelton’s sixth-place effort, finished fifth in the team standings with a 115. The boys’ top four included Glenwood (57), Lewis Central (66), Plattsmouth (74) and St. Albert (110).
The AHSTW girls finished ninth as a team, paced by Rylie Knop in 26th place. The Viking boys had three runners compete, led by Caleb Hatch in 36th.
As for Sonderman, placing second, third, first and first in her first four varsity races has definitely exceeded her own preseason expectations.
“I’ve had a lot of fun. Just being around my teammates and all the positive energy helps me,” she said.
“I did not expect this at all. I feel like it really helped me coming into the season (that) I was hungry and I wanted to do well.”
