Sonderman wins first title at Lynx Invite

HCHS girls and boys squads both place third

 COUNCIL BLUFFS (Sept. 4) -- Harlan Community freshman Lindsey Sonderman claimed her first individual meet title in impressive fashion Saturday morning, winning the girls varsity race by 41 seconds at the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln Lynx Cross Country Invite.
 Sonderman, who placed second and third, respectively, in her first two high school meets at Glenwood and Shenandoah, completed the always-challenging Iowa Western Community College 5K course in 20:31.60. Denison-Schleswig freshman Lola Mendlik took second in 21:12.40.
 The HCHS boys, meanwhile, were led by a second-place time of 18:04 from senior Tyler Shelton, who finished 17 seconds behind St. Albert’s Colin Lillie.
 Both Cyclone teams placed third on the day. Southeast Polk won the girls half of the meet with a score of 40, followed by Glenwood with 44 and HCHS (52). Those three squads combined for 18 of the top 20 medalists.
 In addition to Sonderman’s victory, senior Kaia Bieker placed fifth for the Cyclone girls in 22:01. Ellie Gross finished 13th, followed by Taylor Bieker (15th), Jenna Gessert (18th), Makayla Burchett (19th) and Darbie Argotsinger (20th).
 Missouri Valley edged St. Albert for the boys team title, 68-69, followed closely by HCHS (75) in third. Ian Shelton placed ninth for the Cyclone boys, Kaiden Milliken was 16th and Joseph Bragg came in 24th.
 The Cyclone harriers will return to the Iowa Western campus this Saturday for the Lewis Central Invite at 8:30 a.m.
