Spartans win comeback thriller at Boyer Valley

Exira-EHK boys will return to Dunlap for district opener

    DUNLAP (Feb. 8) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton boys finished conference play with a bang Monday night, roaring back from a 21-6 first-quarter deficit at Boyer Valley and winning 55-54 on Trey Petersen’s three-point shot with six seconds left.
 Petersen, in fact, drilled three trifectas in the final minute as the Spartans completed their big comeback. They outscored the Bulldogs 15-8 in the second quarter, 15-11 in the third and 19-14 in the fourth, improving to 11-9 overall and locking up third place in the Rolling Valley Conference at 11-5.
 Trey Petersen finished his night 5-of-6 from behind the arc and scored a team-high 25 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals.
 Also scoring for E-EHK were Easton Nelson with nine points, Tyler Petersen and Aiden Flathers six each, Jackson Radcliff five and Cash Emgarten four. Tyler Petersen added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals while Radcliff pulled down six boards.
 The Spartans overcame 19 turnovers (they also forced 15), 12 missed free throws and being outrebounded 35-25.
 Boyer Valley (9-5, 7-4 RVC) was led by Trevor Malone’s 19 points, 14 rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots. Adam Puck scored 11 points and Gavin Reineke added nine.
 Exira-EHK finished the regular season with a non-conference game at Panorama Thursday. The Spartans will return to Dunlap for a Class 1A district quarterfinal against the Bulldogs Monday night at 7:00 p.m.

E-EHK 56, CR-B 37
 ELK HORN (Feb. 6) -- The Spartans closed out the home portion of their schedule on Saturday with a 56-37 win over Coon Rapids-Bayard.
 Exira-EHK had a balanced scoring attack, led by Easton Nelson and Jackson Radcliff with 12 points each and Cash Emgarten with 10. Tyler Petersen scored eight points, followed by Aiden Potts and Aiden Flathers with five each and Trey Petersen four.
 The Petersen brothers both had five assists and Emgarten was the top rebounder with nine (five offensive).

CAM 61, E-EHK 54
 ELK HORN (Feb. 5) -- Four Spartans scored in double digits but it wasn’t enough in last Friday’s 61-54 home loss to CAM.
 Tyler Petersen led the team with 15 points and four assists, Cash Emgarten had 13 points, Jackson Radcliff totaled 12 points and eight rebounds and Easton Nelson had 10 points and six boards.
 Tyler Petersen and Emgarten both made 3-of-7 three-pointers on the night.
 “We just couldn’t get that stop that would allow us to tie the game and possibly take the lead. They had an answer every time we made a run,” stated Exira-EHK coach Doug Newton.
 Colby Rich scored a game-high 19 points for CAM and Connor McKee added 10.
