Trio of champs lead Vikings to fifth at WIC Tourney
AUDUBON (Dec. 21) -- AHSTW claimed three champions and one runner-up on its way to placing fifth out of eight teams at Saturday’s Western Iowa Conference Wrestling Tournament held in Audubon.
Logan-Magnolia won the team title by a narrow 206.5-202 margin over Underwood, followed by Missouri Valley (187.5), Riverside (158.5) and AHSTW (146.5). Underwood led the field with five individual champs and Lo-Ma had four.
The Vikings’ three champions included senior Joel Sampson at 132 pounds, sophomore Denver Pauley at 160 and senior Gavyn Fischer at 195. Sampson, Pauley and Fischer combined to pin all eight of their opponents - six of those falls occurring in the first period.
AHSTW 152-pounder Jaedan Rasmussen placed second in his bracket, losing to Lo-Ma’s Briar Reisz 9-5 in the finals.
Seven of the Vikings’ 10 wrestlers placed in the top four, including a third-place effort by Seth Kiesel at 170. Kiesel’s only loss came by an 8-0 major decision vs. sixth-ranked Bryson Freeberg of Tri-Center. Placing fourth for AHSTW were Hayden Fischer at 113 and Garrison Gettler at 138.
Vikings place 2nd in WIC Dual Tourney
AUDUBON (Dec. 20) -- AHSTW placed second to Logan-Magnolia in the WIC Dual Tournament last Friday night, finishing 2-1.
The Vikings won a pair of close duals vs. Treynor (36-31) and Underwood (35-34) before losing to the Panthers 56-24 in the championship round.
Joel Sampson (132) and Seth Kiesel (170) both went 3-0 with three pins to lead AHSTW.
