Two big runs key Cyclone girls' opening win over Treynor

HARLAN (Dec. 2) -- Pivotal runs of 11-0 in the second quarter and 12-0 in the second half paved the way for Harlan Community here Monday night as the Cyclone girls beat Treynor 46-36 for their first season-opening victory in five years.
The 9th-rated Cardinals, who graduated their top four scorers from last year’s 2A state championship team, still proved to be a scrappy and formidable opponent for HCHS by using an active zone defense mixed with pressure.
The score was tied seven times in the first half and the Cyclones trailed 15-13 before tallying 11 unanswered points en route to a 26-19 halftime advantage. Following a 7-0 Cardinal run that tied the score at 30 late in the third quarter, HCHS responded with the next 12 points and was never threatened down the stretch.
Brecken Van Baale nailed a pair of 3-pointers and Raegen Wicks also hit a trey during the key second-half surge. Van Baale made 4-of-5 threes on the night and tied Macie Leinen for the team lead with 12 points.
HCHS head coach Zach Klaassen was pleased with his team’s execution in a 2-3 zone defense and other zone looks after scrapping its man-to-man early on due to foul trouble.
“If we can get ourselves to transition into our spots with the ball in the air... instead of letting it get caught and then making adjustments, we can be pretty good with that 2-3 zone,” he said. “I just got sick of watching (Treynor) shoot free throws in the first half so we had to switch it up.”
Jocelyn Cheek, Claire Schmitz and Wicks added six points apiece for the Cyclones, who held Treynor to a 33.3 percent shooting night and outrebounded the Cardinals 25-18. Cyclone point guard Ashley Hall distributed the ball well with seven assists on the night while Van Baale and Schmitz both had three steals.
Mandy Stogdill and Tori Castle paced the Cardinals with 13 and eight points, respectively, but misfired on 10 of their 12 three-point shots.
