Volleyball: HCHS wins three matches at ADM

 ADEL (Aug. 26) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team opened the season with a sweep of the ADM Quad on Thursday night, defeating Newton, ADM and Algona in straight sets.
 HCHS beat the Cardinals 21-3, 21-18, then swept the host Tigers 21-19, 21-8 and topped the Bulldogs 21-11, 21-10.
 Zophi Hendricks led the Cyclones with 24 kills in the tournament and was 67-of-75 on attacks. Claire Schmitz and Lauren McLaughlin both had 10 kills.
 McLaughlin served 18-of-18 with six aces against Newton and Madison Kjergaard served 14-of-14 with four aces vs. Algona. Kjergaard compiled a team-high 24 digs and Maci Schmitz set 29 assists.
 “It was really awesome. That was a good confidence booster for the girls,” said HCHS head coach Elle Crees. “It was nice just to get those first wins under our belt.”
