Wolverines hand Exira-EHK ugly 14-4 defeat

ELK HORN (June 14) -- Boston DeVault’s first-inning three-run homer set the tone for Nodaway Valley Monday night as the Wolverines put up four crooked numbers in a 14-4 baseball win at Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton.
It was a mistake-filled non-conference game for the Spartans, who committed five errors, walked seven batters and hit five more in dropping to 6-7 overall.
Nodaway added three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and four in the seventh to pull away, stealing nine bases in addition to its 11 total hits.
Wolverine starting pitcher Evan Forcht held Exira-EHK at bay through four and one-third innings, striking out eight and allowing just one unearned run on three hits. He struck out six of the first eight batters he faced to start the game.
Tyler Kingery had a pair of infield singles to lead the Spartans’ five-hit attack and Easton Nelson connected for a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh. Hunter Andersen and Derrek Kommes also singled for E-EHK and Tyler Petersen drew a pair of walks.
Trey Petersen, the first of four Spartan pitchers on the night, took the loss and is now 1-2 on the year. Petersen allowed five hits and five earned runs in three and one-third innings, striking out four and issuing four free passes.
Nodaway Valley (6-3) got two hits each from Caelen DeVault (two doubles), Boston DeVault (one homer), Forcht and Mason Mather (one double). Leadoff batter Mathew Weber scored three runs.
