Mustangs top Vikes in 2A district baseball

 TREYNOR (July 12) -- Following a 48-hour suspension due to rain, AHSTW was outscored 7-0 when play resumed last Monday and lost to Shenandoah 9-2 in an opening round Class 2A district baseball game at Treynor. The contest was tied 2-2 on Saturday, July 10, when play was halted with two outs in the top of the third. The Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the sixth to pull away, improving to 8-20 overall. They lost to Underwood 6-2 in a District 15 semifinal last Tuesday night. AHSTW finished its season with a record of 7-13. “We had a good start to the game on Saturday but were unable to continue the momentum into Monday,” stated Vikings’ head coach Jason Holst. AHSTW’s two-run second inning saw Jordan Ratzlaff single and score on an RBI double by Jacob Coon, who also scored to make it 2-0. Shenandoah tied it in the bottom of the second before play was suspended. Nick Denning, David Johnson and Jake Kelly added singles for the Vikings while Jace Peterson, Coon and Caleb Hatch all drew walks. Blake Holst started on the mound for AHSTW and continued on Monday, taking the loss to finish 4-3. In five-plus innings, Holst allowed seven hits and eight runs, but only four were earned. He walked four and struck out five. Denning got the final three outs, giving up one hit and one run. He walked one and had two strikeouts. Jacob Spangler (Saturday) and Cain Lorimor (Monday) split the pitching duties for Shenandoah. Lorimor got the win, throwing one-hit shutout ball the last four and one-third frames. He walked three and also had three strikeouts. Hunter Dukes, Camden Lorimor and Couper Gile (one double) all had two-hit games to lead the Mustangs. Lorimor and David Rendon both drove in a pair. AHSTW will graduate four seniors off this year’s squad in Blake Holst, David Johnson, Jake Kelly and Jade Thornton. “These four individuals have made major gains in their baseball careers and contributed much to our team,” Coach Holst noted. “Not only are they good players, they are even better people and will be greatly missed. We wish them the very best in the next chapter of life.”
