IWCC summer camps introduce students to skilled trades and career opportunities

HARLAN — Middle and high school students are exploring potential career paths and developing hands-on skills this summer through Iowa Western Community College’s youth camps and discovery day programs.
Throughout June and July, Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) is offering a variety of educational camps at its Council Bluffs campus and regional center locations. The programs are designed to introduce students to high-demand career fields through interactive learning experiences led by Iowa Western instructors.
Camp offerings include welding, automotive technology, robotics, computer-aided design (CAD) and other technical and vocational subjects. The camps provide students with opportunities to explore new interests while gaining practical experience.
At the Shelby County Center in Harlan, camps were held the week of June 22, and featured a Youth Welding Camp and an Automotive Technology Camp for middle school students.
The Youth Welding Camp introduced students in grades 6-8 to welding safety, wire-feed welding and plasma cutting. Participants also completed a custom project to take home, giving them a firsthand look at careers in the skilled trades.
Students attending the Automotive Technology Camp learned basic vehicle maintenance and repair techniques. Camp activities included shop safety instruction and hands-on experience with automotive equipment, providing an introduction to the automotive industry.
IWCC officials say the summer programs support workforce development efforts by helping students discover career interests, build confidence and develop skills that may influence future educational and career decisions.
