HARLAN -- Harlan wasn’t awarded, but was recognized as a finalist in Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative (HSI) during the inaugural HSI awards held Thursday, Feb. 15 in Des Moines. Winners were awarded in a number of categories including individual, school, workplace and hometown. Harlan was among six finalists for the hometown award.

HARLAN -- The 32nd Annual Home, Garden & Living Show in Harlan has been scheduled for Sat., March 24 in Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium, 1104 Morningview Drive. Hosted by the Harlan Newspapers each spring, the event draws approximately 1,500 visitors.

HARLAN -- On Monday, Feb. 19, the Harlan Community Jazz Experience and Jazz Ensemble performed at the Dick Bauman Jazz Festival held in Glenwood. In Class 3A, the Jazz Experience earned first place honors and the Jazz Ensemble was third. The Dick Bauman Jazz Festival is the district qualifier for the Iowa Jazz Championships for schools in southwest Iowa.

HARLAN – Anyone with unpaid parking tickets should get them taken care of soon or face additional administrative costs and fees under an effort by the Harlan Police Department to collect on those tickets. The City of Harlan has entered into a 28E agreement with Shelby County that will allow for the collection of unpaid parking tickets over 30 days old when the owner of a vehicle seeks to re-register the vehicle. REGIONAL -- There have been several reports of scams starting up again in our area, reports the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. The first report is one of a relative being in jail in a different city or state and requesting money to bond the relative out of jail. If this is a call you are receiving please use caution, officials said. There is also a scam which is using local area phone numbers and requesting funds.
HARLAN -- The Harlan FFA Chapter will celebrate National FFA Week, Feb. 17-24. This year’s theme is I Can, We Will and it embraces more than 90 years of FFA traditions while looking forward to the organization’s future. More than 653,000 members will participate in National FFA Week activities at local, state and national levels.
HARLAN -- The Harlan Fire Department held its annual Awards Banquet and Firefighter Recognition on Saturday evening, Feb. 3 at the C.G Thirkildsen Center. Firefighters were recognized for years of service and special achievements. “The Harlan Fire Department has been fortunate in our recruiting efforts with 10 new members that have joined the fire department during the 2017 calendar year,” said Harlan Fire Chief Roger Bissen.
