ATLANTIC - Five HCHS students earned Hawkeye 10 recognition at the conference’s annual All-Academic Team and Character Awards banquet held in Atlantic Wed., April 5.

HARLAN – Harlan Community High Schools HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed well at the state conference held in Des Moines last month, and have qualified for the national event to be held in Florida in June.    All students in attendance qualified for nationals, said instructor Nancy Osborn, and will head to the International Leadership conference and competition June 20-23 in Orlando at Coronado Springs Disney Resort.

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Community Schools Board of Education approved the 2017-18 school calendar at its regular meeting Monday evening, April 10.    The first day of school this fall will be August 23, with the first semester ending on December 22.  The second semester will begin January 3 and end on May 24.    Next year’s school calender will include three built-in weather or state tournament days.

HARLAN -- Myrtue Medical Center’s Oncology nurse, Deb Larson RN, of Harlan, was selected as one of “The 100 Great Iowa Nurses”.      Nurses selected for this honor represent many sectors of health care, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and school and office nurses.

AMES - The Harlan Community High School Jazz Experience, under the direction of Ryan Meyer, won its seventh Class 3A championship at the 42nd Annual Iowa Jazz Championships on Tues., April 4 here.     COUNTY -- As spring cleaning time nears, and residents go about cleaning up the yard and sprucing up buildings, local emergency management officials are asking that they pay close attention to the address marker.    It should be bright and clearly visible from the road. Emergency responders, especially at  night, depend on highly visible house numbers, street signs and rural address markers to properly locate a residence.
