HARLAN — The expansion and renovation of Myrtue Medical Center’s Emergency Room will help address increasing demand for emergency services throughout the county. Myrtue Medical Center’s Board of Trustees approved a $7.7 million dollar expansion and renovation of the Emergency Room. With the receipt of grant funding from the U.S.

 SHELBY COUNTY — A part of Shelby County history will be preserved later this year. The McIntosh and Leland Log Cabins, located at the Shelby County Historical Museum in Harlan, will both be maintained, reported Sarah McDonald, Executive Director of the Shelby County Historical Museum. McDonald said the museum has partnered with Heritage Woodworks, Inc. of Clemons, Iowa.

    ELK HORN — The 2023 Tivoli Fest King and Queen are Wayne and Janell Hansen. They were accompanied by Prince and Princess Theo King and Laila Niklasen.    Tivoli Fest 2023 committee held a Staley’s Chicken Dinner Friday along with the coronation of the king and queen.    Janelle was the first-ever Tivoli Princess in 1981.    Tivoli Fest will be held May 26 and 27. The theme this year is “Skål to Tivoli Fest.”

 HARLAN — Forty-nine-year-old Robert Arkfeld, Jr., of Manilla, was arrested on a Iowa State Patrol warrant Thursday afternoon for vehicular homicide by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, said Sheriff Neil Gross.    “He was also charged with possession of narcotics, a prohibited person with a firearm charge, bringing contraband into a controlled facility and prohibited act,” Gross said.

    MANNING — Have you ever wondered what it was like to paint a mural on the side of a building or on a wall of some shape or size?    The City of Manning is providing the opportunity to anyone during an art-exclusive weekend.

ELK HORN— “The Nordic Swan”, a giant sculpture made from scrapwood and over 300 recycled plastic buckets, has found a place to nest at the Jens Jensen Prairie Landscape Park on the Museum of Danish America grounds in Elk Horn. The sculpture was created by Thomas Dambo, a prominent recycle artist from Copenhagen, Denmark. The Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C.

    HARLAN — For 40 years, an organization has been planting trees in Shelby County — Shelby County Plant Iowa.    It was established in 1983 by Governor Robert Ray and Shelby County boasts the only original committee still in existence in the state.      This is the SC Plant Iowa committee’s 40th year in existence.

    SHELBY COUNTY — Armed with rakes, gloves and hearts of compassion, Harlan Community High School juniors and seniors spent Wednesday morning helping Shelby County residents do projects for which they needed help.    National Honor Society has hosted the event for 25 years, with the exception of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.    This year’s projects included houses, parks and baseball diamonds in Harlan, Defiance, Earling, Portsmouth, Pan

 SHELBY COUNTY — The Shelby County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to approve the Fiscal Year 2024 budget at a meeting held Tuesday, April 18. Prior to passing the resolution, the Board recessed from the regular meeting to hold a public hearing. “Budget planning went well,” said Shelby County Auditor Mark Maxwell. “We pretty much stuck to what our intentions were.

    HARLAN — The Harlan Education Foundation made a substantial donation to the district for a new English Language Arts curriculum.    “They donated $50,000 towards the cost of the $158,000 program for kindergarten through eighth grade.
