HASTINGS, NEB.

 SIOUX CITY -- RJ Harris was a sophomore team member and Caleb Rasmussen served as a student assistant coach for the 2019-20 Briar Cliff University men’s basketball team, which finished 16-14 overall and 7-13 in the GPAC. Harris, a 6-foot-2 forward, is a 2018 AHSTW graduate. He played most of his minutes for the Chargers’ JV team the last two years but did suit for the varsity this past season.

 FORT DODGE -- Cole Burmeister, a 2019 Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton graduate, was a 5-foot-10 freshman guard this past winter for the Iowa Central Community College men’s basketball team.

 AMES -- Michael Rueschenberg, a 2016 graduate of Harlan Community, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Iowa State University in December of 2019, majoring in elementary education with endorsements in reading and social studies.

 SIOUX CITY -- Former area standouts Jordyn Moser and Sophia Peppers helped lead the Morningside College women’s basketball team to 23 wins this past season as the Mustangs made their 18th consecutive appearance in the NAIA Division II National Tournament. Moser, a 5-foot-5 senior guard and 2016 graduate of Harlan Community High School, led the team with 119 assists and 78 steals, ranking among the top 31 nationally in both categories. Peppers

 INDIANOLA -- Simpson College women’s basketball sophomore Kia Rasmussen received Honorable Mention all-conference plaudits from the American Rivers Conference last month after helping the Storm fashion an 18-8 overall record and tie for fourth place in the ARC at 10-6 during the 2019-20 campaign. Rasmussen, a 5-foot-5 guard from Irwin, graduated from IKM-Manning in 2018.

 STORM LAKE -- Sophomore Nicole Lange played in all 25 games for the Buena Vista University women’s basketball team this past season, averaging 8.4 points and 3.3 rebounds for the 1-24 Beavers. Lange, a 5-foot-11 forward and 2018 Harlan Community High School graduate, also excelled in the classroom at BVU as a member of the American River Conference’s Winter All-Academic Team.

  LAMONI -- Sophomore Shauna Reitan played in 16 games for the Graceland University women’s basketball team this past winter before her season was cut short by injury. Reitan is a Manning native and graduated from IKM-Manning in 2018. The 5-foot-7 guard averaged 3.0 points and 1.4 rebounds in a reserve role, logging 12.9 minutes per contest.

 STATE (April 17) -- Iowa’s high school spring sports season was officially cancelled on Friday morning by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Iowa High School Athletic Association. The decision to cancel girls and boys track, soccer, golf and tennis was based on Friday’s recommendations to keep Iowa schools closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year due to the spread of COVID-19.

 AVOCA -- The AHSTW wrestling team held its 2020 season banquet on March 8 at the high school, handing out multiple awards and recognizing another successful year on the mats. The 2019-20 Vikings finished with a dual record of 17-9 - its only losses against Class 2A teams and 1A state dual qualifiers - and earned  a spot in regional duals for the sixth year in a row.

 REGIONAL -- Fourteen student-athletes from IKM-Manning and AHSTW were recognized on the 2019-2020 WIC Academic All-Conference Team. To be eligible, the student must be a senior who has maintained at least a 3.35 cumulative grade point average.

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community bowling teams combined to set eight school records during the program’s eighth year of existence as both squads performed at their best late in the season. The Cyclone girls finished another successful campaign at the state tournament for the fourth time in the last seven years, placing sixth out of eight teams in Class 1A with a total score of 2,433.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Three Harlan Community High School student-athletes competed this winter for the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln boys swim team, also known as the CB Swim Team.

 STATE (April 6) -- The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released an updated spring calendar on Monday for the sports of track and field, golf, tennis and soccer. The schedule is contingent on school resuming Friday, May 1, across the state, with all dates subject to change.

 HARLAN -- One year after putting together one of the best all-around seasons in John Murtaugh’s 17-year coaching tenure at Harlan Community, the 2019-2020 Cyclone wrestling team barely missed a beat. HCHS finished with a 17-5 dual record - robbed of about eight wins due to the Mount Ayr Tournament being snowed out - and finished as tri-champions of the Hawkeye Ten Conference with Creston/O-M and Atlantic (all 9-1) to claim its first H-10 dual
