MAPLETON -- IKM-Manning’s Brooke Waterbury shot identical nine-hole rounds of 50 on Monday, scoring an even 100 to place fourth in the Class 2-A, Region 2A Girls Golf Tournament at Mapleton’s Willow Vale Golf Club. By placing in the top five with her career-best 18-hole score, Waterbury qualified to play in the Region 2 Final tournament Monday, May 23, at Neola’s Quail Run Country Club.

 GLENWOOD -- For the second straight year, Harlan Community has qualified a combined 17 boys and girls entries for the 2016 Co-Ed State Track and Field Championships in Des Moines. Both Cyclone squads placed fifth at Thursday night’s Class 3-A State Qualifying Meet in Glenwood. More importantly, they each qualified eight events for the state meet, set for Thursday through Saturday (May 19-21) at Drake Stadium.

 TREYNOR -- AHSTW sophomore Gage Clay qualified two events for state while Lady Vike junior Jaycie Schueman advanced in one event at Thursday’s Class 2-A Co-Ed State Qualifying Track Meet in Treynor. Clay, who placed 12th in the Drake Relays’ 100-meter dash last month, won both the 100 and 200-meter sprints on Thursday, including a new personal-best time of 22.48 seconds in the 200. His winning time in the 100 was 11.23.

 GRISWOLD -- Three Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton athletes combined to qualify for state in four events with their efforts at Thursday’s Class 1-A Co-Ed State Qualifying Meet in Griswold. Spartan junior Emily Copic earned state bids with second-place finishes in both the 3,000 and 1,500-meter runs. Her season-best times of 11:45.16 and 5:22.62 rank 11th and 15th, respectively among 1-A qualifiers.

 MANSON -- The IKM-Manning track teams both placed in the top three of Thursday’s Class 1-A State Qualifying Meet at Manson, combining to qualify four relays and one individual event for this week’s Co-Ed State Track and Field Championships in Des Moines (May 19-21). The Wolves placed second in the boys team standings with 85 points, trailing only Manson Northwest Webster’s 125.

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community girls tennis team picked up its second dual win of the year on Thursday with a 9-0 victory over Audubon. The Cyclones competed at their conference tournament Monday and will go to the regional tourney at Red Oak Thursday.

 RED OAK -- On April 19, the Harlan Community boys tennis team lost a 9-0 dual meet decision at Glenwood that dropped its season record to 3-4 overall. Three weeks and five dual wins later, the Cyclones are a much stronger team in May and the results bore that out at Tuesday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference Boys Tennis Tournament in Red Oak. Highlighted by Josh Cheek and Kaleb Kaster placing first in the number two doubles bracket, HCHS finished sixth

 GLENWOOD -- On a day when 23 golfers broke 80, Harlan Community notched its best 18-hole team score of the season to place sixth out of 11 teams at Tuesday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference Boys Golf Tournament in Glenwood. Junior Matthew Bjoin’s career-best 76 was good enough for 11th place and a second-team all-conference medal, leading the Cyclones to an overall score of 322.

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Maggie Langenfeld and Amber Gross both earned second-team all-conference status on Tuesday, leading Harlan Community to a fourth-place finish at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Girls Golf Tournament held at Council Bluffs’ Fox Run Golf Club. Langenfeld placed ninth out of 12 medalists with an 18-hole score of 92 that feature a 42 on the back nine.

 AVOCA -- The losing streak is over for the Harlan Community girls soccer team. Getting a career-high four goals from junior forward Haley Arkfeld, the Cyclones took an early 2-0 lead and never trailed in Tuesday’s non-conference game at AHSTW, posting a 4-2 win that stopped a nine-game, five-week slide. HCHS improved to 2-9 on the year while AHSTW fell to 3-4 overall.

 AVOCA -- The AHSTW boys soccer team improved to 6-4 overall here Tuesday night with a 7-2 victory over Clarinda Academy. Viking senior Chase Jacobsen completed a three-goal hat trick with 15:10 left in the match while Rudy Herrera, Preslyn Grobe, Dawson Martin and Gabe Madsen scored one goal apiece.

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team finished the regular season by earning its fifth straight dual win here Thursday, outlasting Red Oak, 5-4, to improve to 8-4 overall and 6-3 against the Hawkeye Ten. After splitting six singles matches vs. the Tigers, the Cyclones prevailed behind decisive doubles wins by the No. 1 team of Isaac Stitz and Alec Plagman (10-1) and the No. 3 team of Josh Cheek and Kaleb Kaster (10-4).

 CLARINDA -- Jon Bieker earned a pair of conference titles and Marcus Klein continued a sensational senior season Thursday night as the Harlan Community boys placed fourth at the Hawkeye Ten Co-Ed Track Meet in Clarinda. Four girls and three boys won multiple individual events on the night, including Bieker’s gold-medal sweep of the shot put and discus.

 AREA -- Qualifiers for the 2016 State Track and Field Championships will be determined Thursday night when Co-Ed State Qualifying Meets are held statewide, starting at 4:00 p.m. The area’s four track schools will compete at four different venues. The Harlan Community girls and boys squads will be part of an eight-team Class 3-A meet at Glenwood.

 REGIONAL -- Monday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference tournaments for boys and girls golf and boys tennis were postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Tuesday at the same time and locations. The boys golf meet is at Glenwood and the girls golf meet is at Fox Run Golf Course in Council Bluffs. The boys tennis tournament is at Red Oak. All three events start at 9:00 a.m. Due to the rescheduling, Harlan Community’s golf triangulars vs.
