Cyclone bowling trio sign with Morningside

 HARLAN -- Three members of the Harlan Community bowling team achieved a program first on Monday, March 21, when Bailey Portwood, Elizabeth Stroud and Josh Grote signed letters of intent to join the bowling squad at Morningside College in Sioux City. All three Cyclone bowlers have been varsity contributors since the program came into existence during their freshmen year in 2012-2013.

Portwood, Langenfeld named second-team All-State bowlers

 HARLAN -- Seven members of the Harlan Community bowling teams received All-State, All-District and/or Academic All-State recognition from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association following the season.All-State: The Cyclones’ All-State bowlers include seniors Bailey Portwood (Class 1-A girls Second Team) and Max Langenfeld (1-A boys Second Team), who were both ranked first out of six individuals on the Second-Team lists.

Juhl earns MVP honors at IBCA Senior All-Star Games

 GRIMES -- Kyle Juhl took MVP honors for the winning boys team, Kyle Wagner was a 3-point contest champion and Jordyn Moser made the all-tournament team as part of the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Games held Friday, March 25 at Dallas Center-Grimes. Juhl and Moser (Harlan Community) and Wagner (IKM-Manning) played in two games each at the annual event featuring many of the state’s top senior basketball players.

Four area girls make IGCA All-State teams

 STATE -- The Iowa Girls Coaches Association selected four area players to its 2015-2016 All-State Basketball teams announced earlier this month. The list includes: Harlan Community seniors Taylor Frederick (First Team) and Jordyn Moser (Second Team) in Class 4-A; IKM-Manning sophomore Kia Rasmussen (Third Team) in Class 2-A; and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton sophomore Sophia Peppers (Third Team) in Class 1-A.

Three area coaches recognized

 STATE -- Three area coaches have been honored by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association as regional or substate coaches of the year after guiding their teams to the state tournament during the 2015-2016 season. Exira-EHK head coach Tom Petersen (Class 1-A, Region 7) and Harlan Community head coach Zach Klaassen (Class 4-A, Region 1) repeated as girls’ regional coaches of the year while IKM-Manning head coach Keith Wagner (Class 1-A, Substate

Bruck wins 60 hurdles at Bob Prince indoor

 VERMILLION, S.D. -- Junior Allison Bruck placed first in the 60-meter hurdles and senior Payten Hoegh placed third in the 400-meter dash on Tuesday, highlighting a series of quality performances for the Harlan Community girls at the Bob Prince Early Bird Indoor Invite at the Dakota Dome. Bruck bested a field of 38 individuals in the 60 hurdles, clocking a time of 9.42 seconds in the finals.

Area track teams open indoor season at Buena Vista

 STORM LAKE -- Three area track teams opened their indoor season this past weekend by competing at the BVU High School Elite indoor meets held at the Dennis Young Indoor Track at Buena Vista University.

HCHS Frosh-JV Girls Basketball

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community freshmen and junior varsity girls basketball teams finished with a combined record of 16-11 for the 2015-16 season. The Cyclone freshmen, coached by Brian James, went 6-3 while Mark Kohorst’s JV squad went 10-8.

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community freshmen boys basketball team, coached by Chad Swanson, finished the season with an overall record of 15-2, including victories in its last 10 games. 

St. Michael’s wins CYO Boys Tourney

 AREA -- The St. Michael’s boys basketball team won this year’s CYO Tournament. They are back-to-back winners of the league tournament and have been undefeated for the last two seasons.

Lansing latest Cyclone to join IHSAA Hall of Fame

 DES MOINES -- Former Harlanite Greg Lansing, the head basketball coach at Indiana State University, was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Basketball Hall of Fame last Saturday during halftime of the Class 4-A state title game at Wells Fargo Arena. Greg was accompanied on the floor by his father, Dave Lansing, who joined the IHSAA Hall of Fame as a coach in 1999.

Wagner, Juhl named to INA All-State basketball teams

 DES MOINES -- Four-year contributors to their respective programs, seniors Kyle Wagner of IKM-Manning and Kyle Juhl of Harlan Community were both honored with a spot on the 2016 Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Boys Basketball teams released Tuesday. Wagner, a 6-foot-4 swingman, was named to the first-team front line in Class 1-A after helping the Wolves (22-3) earn their first state tournament berth since 2010. Juhl, a 6-5 forward who pl

Conry earns multiple honors as Peru State football senior

 PERU, NEB. -- Peru State College kicker Greg Conry was recognized at the College Foundation’s Alumni Chili Feed on February 20 and also at the football booster club’s annual banquet in January following an outstanding four-year career for the Bobcats. A 2012 Harlan Community High School graduate, Greg is the son of Tom and Lisa Conry, rural Harlan.
