With the clock ticking and the HCHS boys basketball season hanging by a thread, Senior Cyclone Cade Sears threw a pass to Senior Cyclone Brehden Eggerss who went up for an off balance 3-point shot tying the game at 51 saving the Cyclones season.
Unfortunately, the Cyclones went cold in overtime and lost 56-51 to the Creston Panthers.

In the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Regional Final Game against the Cherokee Washington Braves, Junior Cyclone Aubrey Schwieso was fouled, making one of two free throws, which would be enough to clinch a state tournament berth for the HCHS Cyclones girls basketball, winning 50-47.

Trailing by 11 points at halftime of their semifinal game against the Treynor Cardinals, it looked like the Exira-EHK Spartans may be headed home early.

The HCHS Cyclones boys wrestling team season has concluded after capping it off with an appearance at the state wrestling tournament which featured Senior Tytan Frohlich, and Juniors Brody McKinley, Spencer Fink, and Jesse Jens in Class 2A.

With a combination of stellar offense and jumping on the Riverside Bulldogs right away, the Exira-EHK Spartans won 75-64 Thursday night, advancing to the 1A – 8 Semifinal.
“We just had to make sure that we found their shooters right away,” said Spartans Head Coach Tony Santisteban said. “Obviously Grady [Jeppesen] is a really good player and he’s tough.”

On a night when its seven seniors were honored including Kyre Nielsen, Will Arkfeld, Franz Reisz, Jason Erlemeier, Brehden Eggerss, Cade Sears, and Quinn Koesters for their contributions to the team, the HCHS Cyclones came out flat and lost 81-50 to the 10-10 Carroll Tigers.

After beating the Clarinda Cardinals 71-40, the HCHS girls basketball team has stamped their ticket to the Regional Final Game for the second consecutive season, which is set to take place Saturday night in Harlan. The Cyclones played the Des Moines Christian Lions last season in the Regional Final Tournament Game losing 64-38.

The AHSTW boys basketball team’s season has come to an end following a tough 60-57 Monday road loss to the Clarinda Cardinals in the 2A – 7 First Round Tournament Game.

IKM-Manning Wolves Senior Ross Kusel led the way Monday night at home against the West Monona Spartans with 33 points, going 14 of 24 from the field and 4 of 10 from 3-point range helping lead the Wolves to the second round of tournament play with a 61-32 victory.

Early into the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s Class 2A – Region 3 First Round Tournament Game, with the Exira-EHK Spartans leading by 10 points over the AHSTW Vikings, Junior Spartan Harlee Fahn made a shot from 3-point range, putting her team up 39-25, helping lead the Spartans to a 52-34 victory, punching their ticket to the next round, and ending the Vikings season.

Towards the end of the first quarter of Monday’s 1A-8 First Round Tournament Game following a timeout from Eagle head coach Larry Gray, Senior Spartan Cash Emgarten sprinted up court and went for a slam dunk that led to a 77-36 win punching their ticket to the second round of the playoffs.

The HCHS girls basketball team came storming out of the gate Saturday night at home to begin their playoff journey against the OABCIG Falcons, opening the game on a 22-0 run, courtesy of Junior Molly Swensen scoring 17 points in the first quarter.
“The passes from my teammates, and them telling me to shoot gave me confidence,” Swensen said.

Towards the end of the first quarter in Friday’s home game with the game tied at 12, Senior Cyclone Jason Erlemeier came down court launching a 3-point shot, followed by a mid-range jump shot, putting his team up 17-12 en route to a dominant 68-45 victory over the Creston Panthers.

At the end of the first half of Thursday’s home game against Denison, Junior Viking Luke Sternberg made a shot from 3-point range giving the Vikings a 34-19 lead en route to an eventual 63-56 victory, their 5th of the season.
Before the game started, Senior Viking Nick Denning was honored by the school for making his 91st start, a new school record. Denning has been starting games since his freshman season.

In the fourth quarter of Thursday’s home game against the Denison Monarchs, Senior Viking Delaney Goshorn made a mid-range jump shot to secure her 1000th career point.
“It means a lot,” Goshorn said. “I’ve put in a lot of time on my own with my parents at our shop. It’s really rewarding, and doing it at home, our last home game of my career means a lot.”
