Construction has been ongoing along the Highway 59 corridor where the new Bomgaar’sbuilding and the new Buck Snort Restaurant are being constructed.

    HARLAN -- Crews from contract PSC recently set the base for a new switchgear basement and vault on the south side of Chatburn Ave. at 6th St.

    ELK HORN -- Back in 2011 or 2012, Lou and Mike Howard had a vision to open a new restaurant in Elk Horn. Even though plans changed, the dream lived on. The Howards are currently working to open a restaurant with Danish influences in the Keysight Technology building west of where the Danish Inn stood.    In August of 2017, the Howards purchased the Danish Inn with plans to remodel it.

    HARLAN -- Having world-class cancer care available in southwest Iowa has been a source of comfort and hope for Harlan resident Erin Berkley.    Erin, 41, has been named a 2018 Spirit of Courage award winner by the Jennie Edmundson Foundation. She will be honored during the Spirit of Courage Celebrity Weekend on Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5 in Council Bluffs.

    SHELBY -- The family of Duane and Jan Hursey will host an open house in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, August 11 from 2-4 p.m. at the Shelby Community Building.    They are the parents of two daughters: Donna Hayes (Steve Kasperbauer), Denison; and Amy (Thomas) Hursey-Throlson, Harlan. The couple has six grandchildren. 

    DUNLAP -- Robert and Mildred Cogdill of Dunlap observed their 70th wedding anniversary on July 10. They celebrated with a lunch, card shower and many phone calls from friends and family. 

    DES MOINES -- Jordan Brelje of Cedar Falls and Colton Cornwell of Waterloo exchanged marriage vows on April 28, 2018 at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines. Deacon Fred Cornwell, grandfather of groom, performed the 1 p.m. double ring ceremony.    Parents of the couple are Timothy and Becky Brelje, Harlan; and Ron and Chris Cornwell, Elkhart, IA. 

 DES MOINES (July 28) -- With its top two pitchers unavailable, a lot of things had to go right for Harlan Community to have a shot in Saturday’s Class 3A state title game vs.

 The 2018 Harlan Community baseball team added to a growing trophy case last week, making the program’s eighth consecutive state tournament appearance and reaching the championship game for the fourth year in a row, ending with an 11-1 loss to Davenport Assumption on Saturday.
