HARLAN - For many years, the Shelby County Health Foundation has been dedicated to helping  support  health care resources that benefit patients and their families, employees, volunteers, and the communities they serve in Shelby County.

    REGIONAL -- The Harlan Newspapers is again teaming up with area merchants to give away $1,200 in gift certificates this holiday season. Simply find the announcement inside the Harlan Tribune or PennySaver each of the next five weeks for details, complete the registration form and deliver to the Harlan Newspapers office. Winners  will be drawn each Monday, Nov. 14 - Dec.

    REGIONAL -- The Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory has confirmed 33 cases of West Nile virus this year, including the death of an elderly individual from NW Iowa in late October. This is twice the number of cases that were reported last year at this time.    The year 2016 has been a particularly prolific year for mosquitoes with the warm, wet summer that has transitioned into a warmer than normal fall.

    ELK HORN -- Jacquetta Ruth Jenkins, 76, Elk Horn, died November 2 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.    Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan.    Jenkins is survived by daughters Denise (Greg) Brown of Wichita, KS, Lisa Hansen of Audubon, and Linda Beckel of Council Bluffs; son William “Will” (Heidi) Jenkins, Jr.

    HARLAN -- Paul P. Stephany, 89, Harlan, died November 3 at Nebraska Heart Institute and Heart Hospital.    Services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Omaha National Cemetery in Omaha, NE.  Visitation is Tuesday from 9-11 a.m.

    PHARR, TX -- Former Harlan resident Stan Johannsen of Pharr, TX will observe his 80th birthday on November 7. His family is planning a card shower in his honor. Hall Acre Rd. #609, Pharr, TX 78577.    Stan and Veretta’s family includes Val and Jeff Sparks, Midland, TX; and the late Shelly Lewis, and her husband, Perry Lewis, also of Midland.

    WALNUT -- Marilyn Krohn of Walnut will celebrate her 80th birthday on November 14. Her family is requesting a card shower in her honor.     DEFIANCE -- LeRoy and Jeannie Heese of Defiance will mark their 50th wedding anniversary on November 12. Their family is planning a card shower in their honor.

    DES MOINES -- Thomas and Lisa Conry of Harlan announce the engagement of their daughter, Sarah, to Joseph Hahn, son of Michael Hahn, Earling, and Michelle Beasmore, Hills, IA.    The couple will wed on November 12 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines.
