Cyclones open dual season with home quad sweep

 HARLAN (Dec. 10) -- The Harlan Community wrestling team fell just one shy of the school record for dual wins last season by going 25-3. Hoping to take another shot at that mark in 2019-20, the Cyclones are off to a good start following Tuesday’s home quad sweep of Southwest Iowa (Sidney), St. Albert and Glenwood. HCHS opened the meet with a 74-6 win vs.

Senior trio leads Cyclones past Kuemper 62-46

 CARROLL (Dec. 10) -- Harlan Community took control with an early 16-0 run to lead 23-4 and cruised to its third straight win Tuesday night, beating the Kuemper Catholic boys 62-46 to set up a big matchup with Denison-Schleswig on Friday. The Cyclones’ three starting seniors led the way with big all-around games against the Knights.

HCHS girls beat Knights by 42

 CARROLL (Dec. 10) -- Sophomore Claire Schmitz had a career night on Tuesday with 20 points, 15 rebounds and four steals to lead the resurgent Harlan Community girls basketball team to a 69-27 rout at Kuemper Catholic. HCHS never trailed in the Hawkeye Ten contest, taking control with a 25-5 second-quarter surge and improving to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Lady Vikes hold off IKM-M girls in battle of unbeatens

 AVOCA (Dec. 10) -- The AHSTW girls basketball team kept its undefeated start alive here Tuesday night with a hard-fought 53-43 victory over previously unbeaten IKM-Manning. The game was tight throughout, with AHSTW building a 30-22 halftime lead and holding the Wolves at bay in the second half.

Wolves' Ahrenholtz scores 36 vs. Panorama

 MANNING (Dec. 7) -- IKM-Manning junior Alexa Ahrenholtz surpassed 30 points by halftime and finished with 36 points, nine rebounds and eight steals to lead the Wolves past Panorama 78-57 last Saturday. Ahrenholtz shot 11-of-15 from the field overall, made 5-of-7 three-pointers and went 9-of-10 from the free throw line in a career-best performance. Lexi Branning also had a big game for the Wolves with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Viking wrestlers place first at Nodaway Valley

 GREENFIELD (Dec. 7) -- Led by four individual champions, the AHSTW wrestling team won last Saturday’s Coach Riley Invitational at Nodaway Valley with 193.5 total points. See the photo caption for more info.

Cyclone bowlers sweep Tri-Center in season opener

 HARLAN (Dec. 5) -- Darren Stein rolled the top two-game set of the day with a 388 as the Harlan Community bowling teams opened the season with a dual sweep of Tri-Center December 5 at Cyclone Lanes. The HCHS boys won by a final margin of 293 total pins (2,325 to 2,032) while the girls won by 229 pins (2,046-1,817). Stein rolled games of 206 and 182 to lead all individual varsity bowlers.

 HARLAN (Dec. 6) -- An incredible 36 offensive rebounds erased the sting of cold shooting Friday night as Harlan Community utilized a big second-quarter run for the second straight game and improved to 2-0 with an 80-42 Hawkeye Ten Conference boys basketball win over Shenandoah. One night after taking control against Blair with a 28-4 surge, the Cyclones erupted for 22 unanswered points at nearly the same point of the game vs.

Wildcats top Spartans 52-51

 ELK HORN (Dec. 3) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton boys basketball team opened the season with a hard-fought 52-51 defeat against Glidden-Ralston last Tuesday night. The game was tightly-contested throughout. Senior Creighton Nelson led the Spartans with 21 points and 16 rebounds while Tyler Petersen hit three 3-pointers and scored 12 points and Jayden Jensen also hit double digits with 10.

Vikings rout Riverside

 AVOCA (Dec. 3) -- Sophomore Raydden Grobe hit 13-of-17 shots and poured in 34 points last Tuesday to lead the AHSTW boys past Riverside 73-33. The Vikings raced out to leads of 25-5 after one quarter and 51-14 at halftime, shooting 60 percent as a team. Grobe made 4-of-6 three-pointers and the team finished 9-of-20 from the arc.

Cyclone girls basketball team starts 2-0

 HARLAN (Dec. 3) -- During a frustrating 5-17 campaign last winter, the Harlan Community girls basketball team didn’t win its first two games until the 5th and 8th of January. Flash forward 11 months and the Cyclones - armed with seven returning letter winners - reached the two-win mark in just over 24 hours. One night after beating a rebuilding Treynor team 46-36, HCHS overcame a sluggish start and held off a late rally to top St.
