Goshorns join Booster Club Hall of Fame

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community Athletic Booster Club Hall of Fame inductees for the 2019-2020 school year are Kevin and Suzanne Goshorn of rural Harlan. The Goshorns were recognized prior to the HCHS vs. Red Oak boys basketball game on Friday, December 20. The Goshorns are the parents of two daughters, Nicole and Brooke, and have been very active booster club members, serving on the board of directors from 2011-2017.

Scheffler breaks Lady Vike record for career rebounds

 AVOCA -- AHSTW senior Kinsey Scheffler became the school’s all-time girls basketball leader in career rebounds last month, breaking the school mark of 543 previously held by Casey Peters during the Lady Vikes’ December 13 home game against Audubon. Scheffler enters January with 573 career rebounds and is averaging 15.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as a senior for AHSTW, which will take an 8-1 record into its January 7 home game vs.

Bowling: HCHS rallies fall short at Denison

 DENISON -- Both Harlan Community bowling teams fared well in the Baker Games format but could not overcome their individual round deficits in losing to Denison-Schleswig Dec. 19 at Lucky Lanes. The HCHS girls ended up falling by just 37 total pins (2445 to 2408) after outscoring the Monarchs 831-772 in the Baker Games.

Trio of champs lead Vikings to fifth at WIC Tourney

 AUDUBON (Dec. 21) -- AHSTW claimed three champions and one runner-up on its way to placing fifth out of eight teams at Saturday’s Western Iowa Conference Wrestling Tournament held in Audubon. Logan-Magnolia won the team title by a narrow 206.5-202 margin over Underwood, followed by Missouri Valley (187.5), Riverside (158.5) and AHSTW (146.5).

Boys Basketball: Cardinals top Wolves

 TREYNOR (Dec. 20) -- The IKM-Manning boys battled, but second-ranked (2A) Treynor gradually pulled away last Friday and handed the Wolves their fifth straight loss by a final count of 71-52. The Cardinals, now 7-0 overall and 6-0 in Western Iowa Conference play, led 19-14 after a quarter, 38-24 at the half and 57-37 after three.

 HARLAN (Dec. 20) -- The Harlan Community boys raced out to a 34-4 second-quarter lead Friday night before finishing off Red Oak 69-17 in a Hawkeye Ten boys basketball game. HCHS played a half-court zone defense throughout but did press the Tigers early and scored several first-half baskets off turnovers.

 CLARINDA (Dec. 19) -- Twelve Harlan Community wrestlers went 2-0 Thursday night as the Cyclones easily swept a double dual at Clarinda with wins of 78-0 over Shenandoah and 67-9 vs. the host Cardinals.
