 HARLAN (Sept. 27) -- The Harlan Community football team will open district play Friday night with a tough Homecoming contest against Adel-DeSoto-Minburn.

Cyclones’ 1979 fall softball team to be honored Friday

 HARLAN (Sept. 27) -- Members of the 1979 Harlan Community fall softball team - the last of its kind at HCHS - will be honored prior to Friday’s Homecoming game at Merrill Field, along with former coaches Russ Gallinger and Sue Fowler. Forty years ago, the 1979 Cyclonettes had an undefeated regular season.

HCHS cross country girls win again at Creston, boys place second

 CRESTON (Sept. 24) -- Claiming a trio of top-three individuals combined, the Harlan Community girls won their fourth team title of the year and the boys earned their best finish so far (second) in Tuesday’s Creston Cross Country Invitational held at Southwestern Community College. The Cyclone girls were led by Lucy Borkowski’s second-place run in 20:27 while Kaia Bieker placed third in 20:44.

AHSTW girls, IKM-M boys place high at T-C Invite

Spartans win at Glidden-Ralston 43-20

 GLIDDEN (Sept. 20) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton football team evened its record at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in 8-Player, District 8 with a 43-20 win at Glidden-Ralston last Friday night. Exira-EHK junior quarterback Tyler Petersen threw five touchdown passes on the night, completing 12-of-24 throws for 183 yards with one interception.

 MANNING (Sept. 20) -- Kyler Rasmussen rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns and IKM-Manning’s defense stepped up in a big way here Friday night as the Wolves notched their first win of the year with a 17-7 Homecoming conquest of East Sac County.

Vikings outlast M-SM 33-29

 AVOCA (Sept. 20) -- Sophomore Denver Pauley scored the game-winning touchdown with 52 second left - his third of the game - as the AHSTW football team rallied past Martensdale-St. Marys for a 33-29 victory Friday night. The Vikings improved to 2-2 overall and will open Class A, District 9 play at Riverside (0-4) on Friday, Sept. 27. Martensdale-St. Marys is now 3-2 on the year.

Kuemper Cross Country Invite cancelled

 CARROLL (Sept. 21) -- The Kuemper Catholic Cross Country Invite scheduled for Saturday (Sept. 21) was cancelled a day in advance due to wet grounds and the forecast for more rain Friday night. Area teams set to attend the two-class meet included Harlan Community, IKM-Manning and Exira-EHK. No make-up date was announced.

HCHS earns efficient four-set win over Atlantic

 ATLANTIC (Sept. 19) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team won its third consecutive Hawkeye Ten road match Thursday night with a four-set victory in Atlantic, prevailing 25-13, 25-11, 19-25, 25-11 to improve to 3-1 in conference play (8-8 overall). HCHS served at a 93.5 percent clip with 15 aces and produced a kill efficiency of .217, totaling 39 kills to just 14 attack errors.

Lady Vikes’ rally falls short at No. 14 Riverside

 OAKLAND (Sept. 19) -- The AHSTW volleyball team rallied back from an 0-2 deficit to force a fifth set at 14th-ranked (Class 1A) Riverside Thursday night before losing a heartbreaker, 19-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-10, 9-15.
