IKM-M hosts Special Olympics Softball Skills Competition

 MANNING -- The annual Special Olympics Iowa Softball Skills Competition was held in Manning July 11 at the IKM-Manning football field. Approximately 55 athletes and 50 volunteers took part in the event, hosted by IKM-Manning for the fourth consecutive year. Athletes from 10 delegations in central and western Iowa competed in hitting, base running, fielding and throwing.

Sears and Bruck earn All-State baseball honors

 DES MOINES (Aug. 6) -- Harlan Community’s potent one-two pitching punch earned all-state honors Tuesday as senior Brett Sears and junior Connor Bruck were recognized on the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association’s All-State baseball teams for 2019. Sears, who was named second-team all-state in 2017 and first-team all-state in 2018 - both times as a pitcher - made this year’s Class 3A first team as an infielder.

Schaben part of rising ISU softball program

 AMES -- Starting all but one game and posting numerous career highs, Iowa State junior third baseman Logan Schaben helped the 2019 ISU softball team reach new heights this past spring as the Cyclones notched their first winning season since 1995. The daughter of Gary and Jackie Schaben, rural Portsmouth, and a 2016 graduate of Harlan Community High School, Logan scored 18 runs and had 17 RBI on the year.

Sears helps WIU win most games since ‘07

 MACOMB, ILL. -- For the second straight year, Westphalia native Dillon Sears was part of a record-breaking season for the Western Illinois University baseball team. Sears played in 34 games and started 29 times - mostly at second base and shortstop - for the Fighting Leathernecks, who finished 22-31 overall and 16-14 inside the Summit League.

Schaben tabbed first team All-State

 STATE -- Led by first team selection Morgan Schaben of Harlan Community, five area softball players have been recognized on the Iowa Girls Coaches Association 2019 All-State softball teams. A second-team selection last year, Schaben moved up to the Class 4A first team this summer following an outstanding season both at the plate and in the pitching circle for the Cyclones, who improved their record from 15-17 in 2018 to 28-8. Also receiving a

Schaben plays in IGCA All-Star Series

 WAUKEE -- Harlan Community senior pitcher Morgan Schaben competed in the 35th annual Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association All-Star Softball Series last Monday (July 29) at Waukee High School. Schaben was selected to play for the Red All-Star Team, which finished 1-1 against the Blue and the White. Schaben pitched four and two-thirds innings on the day and allowed just one earned run, also playing about six innings at second base.

Sears named IHSBCA All-Star

 CARROLL -- Harlan Community senior Brett Sears has been selected to play for the Small Schools West squad in the 2019 Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Series, set for Thursday-Sunday, August 8-11. This year’s all-star games will be played at Merchants Park in Carroll. Sears was named to the team as an infielder.

Portsmouth wins IWL Baseball Tourney

 PORTSMOUTH -- Justin Schaben and Heath Stein both hit a home run and Stein also earned the win on the mound as Portsmouth defeated Persia 6-4 in the championship game of the Iowa Western League Baseball Tournament on Sunday, July 28. Portsmouth outhit Persia 13-8 in the game and both sides committed one error. Schaben had three hits for Portsmouth, including a two-run homer, and Heath Stein also went yard.

Powers performs well in Drive, Chip & Putt golf competitions

 REGIONAL -- Kylie Powers of Irwin competed well in two rounds of qualifiers for the Drive, Chip & Putt Championships during the past month at Omaha and Fort Dodge. Powers, the daughter of Tom and Sherry Powers and an incoming freshman at IKM-Manning High School this fall, placed third overall in the Girls 14-15 year-old division in a local qualifier held June 30 at Oak Hills Country Club in Omaha.

Heese named Hudl Baseball Coach of the Year in Nebraska

 BENNINGTON, NEB. -- Earling native Scott Heese has been named the 2018-2019 Nebraska Coaches Association Hudl Baseball Coach of the Year for all classes. Heese was presented his award on July 21 at the NCA Awards Banquet in Lincoln. Coaches of the year are selected by their peers for service to their respective sport and for the success they have had in recent years.

Eight area athletes on All-State soccer list

 AREA -- Five players from AHSTW and three from Harlan Community were named to the 2019 Boys All-State Soccer teams released in June by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. The list of area honorees includes four first-teamers: Seth Kiesel, Brayton Tuma and Adrian Herrera from AHSTW and Levi Culp from HCHS. AHSTW and HCHS both reached the substate final round of the playoffs in Class 1A and 2A, respectively, this past season.

Harlan Summer Swim Team caps successful season with another conference title

 MISSOURI VALLEY -- Sixty-three members of the Harlan Community Summer Swim Team competed in the Western Iowa Swim League conference meet on Saturday, July 13, at Missouri Valley. Harlan scored 1,278.5 points and won its 13th straight conference crown by a dominating margin to continue its recent run of success.
